I bought a 2014 Octavia last year. I've just been delving into the servicing requirements a bit more and I've got no idea what it needs or when it should have it. The 'oil change in 400 miles' has popped up, and on calling the Skoda dealer to query they suggest that while it's in I have the long service. However, on the in car service display it says that 'inspection' is due in 11000 miles, or 400 days. He said this would cost £215.

Summary of its history;

 

Service 1 - April '14 - 6000 miles - Oil change service only

Service 2 - April '15 - 14000 miles - Oil change service, Inspection service, not with 'extended service scope,' whatever that is.

Service 3 - April '16 - 23000 miles - Oil change service, inspection service, WITH extended service scope. Dust + pollen filter change

Service 4 - April '17 - 32000 miles - Oil change service, inspection service, not with extended service scope. Fuel + air filter + dust/pollen filter change

Service 5 - About now due the oil service indicator - 40000 miles - ??????????

 

So it looks like it's had an 'extended service scope' (long service?) in April 16, but the in car indicator says it doesn't need one until another 11000 miles/400 days - but that'll be 3 years since the last 'long service.'

 

As for the £216, apparently that includes oil change and filters etc, and the long service. I've got no idea what the long service entails, or why it's not priced the same as either the interim or major services online.

 

Does anyone have a clue what you're supposed to do with these cars? Seems as transparent as mud.

Potentially, at the third service it's been changed to interval as the previous owner projected some serious mileage?

 

Mine is currently on flexible, I do about 12-14k a year, however I'm about 3k left until the second/major service at which it'll be in to the dealership for its last Skoda one due to warranty expiring at the end of October and I'll be asking them to swap it over to 10k fixed. 

 

I know a lot of people are against the 18k oil change regime, myself included, as I'm keeping the car until it's 80k I'm looking at annual oil exchanges for piece of mind to see me through. 

 

Could get it serviced then ask them to swap it to your liking?

Looks pretty secrewed up to me. Service two seems weird because it's neither long life or major!  What you do with the car is entirely up to yourself but according to the above, you're not on longlife. Although I don;t have an issue with longlife, if I'd been given the above history, I'd continue with having the car servicing every year.

 

I also can't fathom out why the pollen filter was changed on service 3 ?  Should have been service 2. Then to compound the error they change it 12 months later !!!  Whatever happens, leave until service 6 befroe you replace it again.

 

Longlife is priced differently because (in theory at least) it will use more expensive oil. In reality longlife oil can be cheaper, similar or more expensive than the oil used for yearly servicing regime - just depends where you buy it.

 

 

Looks to me like it just needs an oil & filter change, however you don’t mention what variant the car is. If it has a 6 speed DSG gearbox that needs an oil and filter change. If it has 4x4 that needs a filter and oil change. I imagine it’s a diesel since fuel filter is mentioned, but if petrol, at some point the spark plugs will need changing (maybe 60,000 miles?).

It's the 2.0tdi, with the manual 6-speed.

 

It has got to be intentionally confusing. I can't even find a mention of a long life service on the Skoda website. And then it's oddly priced between an interim service and a major service. 

 

I think tomorrow I'll go above the local dealer and try and get some more solid info. Many thanks for your input.

Mine is a 2016 petrol Superb so I am always nervous about advising people with slightly different cars. However be advised that there is no significant difference between a “normal” service and a “long life” service, the ONLY difference is that for a long life service, long life oil MUST be used. However at our local dealer, they say they use long life oil regardless of whether you want it on long life or fixed service intervals, so it just comes down to how they set the up the service reminder indicator.

 

On my car there is an oil change (minor) service, and an inspection service. Plus the odd things I mentioned like DSG, Haldex, plugs at the appropriate (and long) intervals.

 

But yes it is definitely very confusing - no service booklet giving the maintenance schedule for my car, unlike all the cars I’ve ever owned previously! You can pay around 8 euros for an hour on ERWIN and download the service schedule, but it shouldn’t be that difficult!
