Dashcam advice

Featured Replies

Hi everyone -

Soon to be joining the Kodiaq Owner Club -

I'd like to install a dashcam - maybe get the dealer to fit it before I pick it up -

Any recommendations please?  Is the best place on the back of the rear view mirror?  I'd  like a wirefree  option - and for it to turn on automatically when the car starts -

Am I asking for too much?

Thanks -

Charlie-

It's a pretty easy, if not fiddly DIY.

Buy a suitable dash cam and windscreen mount, fix it up near the rear-view mirror, feed the wire up under the headlining along the top of the windscreen, down behind the A-pillar (watch the airbag)and down into the end of the dash / fuse box.

Use a piggyback fuse onto a switched-live fuse and it'll power up / off with the ignition.

Unfortunately I think the Kodiaq fuse box isn't accessed by removing the dash end panel (between the dash and door) which made it really easy to drop the power feed down from out of the A-pillar into the fusebox on the Octavia, Yeti, Superb, Fabia etc. On the Kodiaq isn't the fusebox accessed through the storage bin under the headight switch?

Hopefully there is a way to get from the fuse box to the base of the A-pillar through / behind the dash.

This is for the Superb but the principles should largely be the same...

That's great - Thank you Silver -

Looks pretty straight forward -

Charlie.

The Kodiaq fusebox is indeed aaccessed through the storage box. If you run a wire down the A-pillar you can easily route it behind the dash into that space. You have access up under the footwell that makes it rather easy to help feed it in. In terms of piggybacking an ignition fuse I used 48 from the blindspot monitoring system.

I would suggest too there is not room for the usual 90 degree fuse tap in that location as the fuse pushes slightly on the electric seat module (if you have electric seats) so I used the tap below instead which gives more flexibility. Also leave the car 5 plus minutes to let everything power down before you mess with fuses as you don't want a warning light to need to be cleared by the dealer.

In terms of earth connection there is one clear star screw visible that holds the fusebox to the chassis. I released this half a turn and used the appropriately sized 'F' connector to slide under the bolt and retightened.

I have a Vicovation Opia 2. That also requires you used the powersupply built into the lighter socket point as it is 5v and not 12. I used a female 12v socket to plug into. If you take your time, cut the cables appropriately and carefully position the cables it all sits and fits nicely.

I purchased one of these without the piggyback model ..

Great feedback, nice one!
