Electrics in door cut - how to replace?

Featured Replies

So I’ve found out why central locking electric windows etc won’t work... electrics in door appear to have been cut. I’m sure I read about this somewhere - any idea on how to replace? Is it a job I could attempt myself?

It depends how good your soldering skills are. You ideally need to bare the ends of the broken wires, solder in a short extension piece and then shrink wrap, or very well insulate the joins. It is a fiddly job but quite doable with some care and patience. Just make sure that you connect the correct ends together.

If you are having to ask if its something you can do yourself you probably don't have enough soldering experience to attempt it.

Whoever you get to replace it, make sure they don't use crimps, there is probably way too much flex in the wiring loom for crimps to last.

I have no idea if you can easily replace he loom or not but that may be an option.

My dad did this on my brothers Audi, he used some extra wire to solder in so it didn’t have the wires too tight, then used proper tape over the join.

If I was needing to complete that repair, I'd be cutting these wires back away from that area of flexing, then splice in a repair section to each one using heat shrink tubing to cover/support each repair point.

I did a temporary repair with those little white plastic connectors that have a screw each end. You just loosen, slide the wire in and tighten on both ends. I thought I'd be taking it to the workshop to get a new, soldered in bit of wire one day but that day has yet to come. They are still functioning well after a few years!

Ah I did consider the connectors! We have an electrician friend of a friend coming today so hopefully he will sort.

I’m cynical about the door being the source altho obv the wires as a whole will affect locking and windows but I can’t explain the radio involvement unless they’re on the same circuit? So the fuse sounds more likely and hopefully it’ll be that!

thanks for all your comments :-)

Well, despite what you might think, having chopped wires which at one time probably had their conductors connecting to the car metal frame, and might have that again until you get them sorted, I'd not bother replacing any fuses until that obvious wiring problem has been addressed.

IMO it's because the wire type is the wrong type for the use, it should be a more flexible wire, not as it currently is.

It should also be protected within an outer sleeve.
