I have told the W.O. that I am stripping the bathroom, and have tidied up! But I really have more important things to do ! ( glass of wine & car polish involved ! )

Reason I ask is that after 6k miles I removed my K&N thinking it could do with a clean and it was almost spotless... I've read on here that Green filters need cleaning every 5-6k miles, just wondering why the K&N stays so clean?

When I bought the car it showed it was serviced at 8.5K , when I got it it showed 11K and it has now 15k, so all things being equal I am changing the oil tomorrow and as a precaution I decided to clean the air filter, because I don't think the dealer would do this ( I wouldn't want him to anyway) ramble, ramble,

But, it was black, covered in grass, and although I haven't noticed any difference to its performance it can't do it any harm, being clean can it ?

it only took me 2 hrs start to finish, and while it was drying I washed the car, and now it's bl**dy snowing !

It could have been extra dirty because my daily commute is a mixture between town stop start and open windy fields ?

My Dad told me when I was a kid that clean cars go faster, he never washed a car in his life, I used to get 6d for washing his huge Cresta PA ( brillo pads on the rusty bumpers for good measure)

And reminiscing I once washed the interior of his leather clad Rover 90 with Fairy liquid, I don't think it ever recovered!

Didn't want to openly make that statement Mil as I know that the green filter is seen as the "dogs dooburys" in terms of a Fabia mod, but in my experience K&N takes some beating - I've never had to clean one once, and I've fitted one to every car I've owned (and thats been up to 50k worth of motoring in some cars), so to hear that the "Green" requires a "Clean" every 5k or so in order to maintian any slight performance gains (as well as not fitting to good) has raised my eyebrows on more than one occasion.

- Cue back-lash and mass debate on best air filter pannel available.............

As Lummox says - the air filter that gets DIRTY quickest filters more of the crud out of the air than the one that stays clean.

Considering the paper filter was filthy after 10k miles (supposedly it should be replaced every 40k miles, which IMHO would be too late, if you stick with the paper one why not replace it every 10k, when it's serviced?) - a better filter would have to be replaced more often than that

Fair points, can't argue with any of that. At the end of the day I think we all get carried away with debates about air filters on this forum. At the end of the day they only provide slight gains - its not like the wrong choice of filter costs you 20bhp or anything !!
