Is a Sim card worth it for Columbus ?

Featured Replies

Hi getting my SEL Estate on Thursday and wondering if getting a sim is worth the cost, I have a HTC 10 Android phone with Google 8.0 and the auto tethering apps will not work with this, so i was wondering how much hassel it is to reconnect the WIFI each time i get into the car.

The car is a 150TDI manual so will be interesting if it has AdBlue or not, cant wait to get it first brand new car in years even if it is a company car.

Any advise on the sim would be very welcome.

  • Ok thanks will give them a try, I am using a Garmin sat nav at the moment in my old car so will give them a try

  • I tried both and didn't see a difference tbh.   Could just be that at driving distance the difference is minimal, it could be that dev mode 1080 doesn't actually work, who knows lol.

I got one which includes an adequate amount of data for a reasonable price and must admit it does update the traffic better than the 'normal' car.

Hi John, can you tell me what type you got and how much data you use please, i was looking at a 3 sim 12 Gig that lasts a year for £32 or do you use less data than that ? .

I think it was the same one but maybe half that price. I'd have to check....

For the price it's really an unmissable option.

OK thanks

Is the SIM slot now standard for the Columbus then?  When I ordered my first Superb IIRC, it was an option.  It no longer appears on the configurator...

Says its standard on MY18 SEL

Not sure if this helps but a dirt cheap option is Three's data reward sim . Its a pay as you go sim 3p/2p/1p for calls/txts/mb. It gives you 200MB FREE every month, and top ups start at £2 but you don't need to top up to get your free 200mb.

Thanks for that will have a look xman.

I spec'd it but the car came without it. Slightly annoyed but I didn't think it was worth complaining about too much as the Connect functions don't need it and you can always tether the phone for updates etc.

It is slightly annoying that it tells you there's an update but you need to tether for it to download, but apart from missing Google Maps I don't think there is any huge downside. Slight benefit being I have one less SIM to pay for :)

I think it is standard with the Columbus sat nav system, I hope so ordered a “3” 12 Gig 12 month card today got it for £30.

john999 can you swop connections as I will park the car on my drive and can access the home WiFi if I wanted to download bigger files like map updates etc.

Picked mine up last week but it was built in November sportline 150 tdi and it has not got a sim slot, I thought they were standard on Columbus but obviously not

Just had a look at the manual and there are 2 types for Columbus, must be a built in sim for emergency call thing

If that does work it would be the way forward but not sure it is set up that way.  We have downloaded onto SD cards for transfer bit of a faff really as the simplest method by far would be to connect to wifi and phone home.
