Is a Sim card worth it for Columbus ?

Featured Replies

Provided you phone supports the Remote SIM (rSIM) profile you could let it connect to and use the SIM in your phone for data.

  • Ok thanks will give them a try, I am using a Garmin sat nav at the moment in my old car so will give them a try

  • I tried both and didn't see a difference tbh.   Could just be that at driving distance the difference is minimal, it could be that dev mode 1080 doesn't actually work, who knows lol.

I've just bunged in a 'three' data SIM with 12gb preloaded which lasts for 12 months. See how it goes.

How much did you pay for it please?

£40 or you can buy 24gb which lasts 2yrs for £60.

Seeing as how the Skoda connect licence only lasts for 12months before you have to pay for it I thought id throw in the 12gb card for 12 months.

How long it lasts or how often I use it will remain to be seen.

Thanks. Is that trio ?

Yeah I think the receipt did mention trio on it.

Great thanks. Will take a look on eBay for one and give it a go when I get the car on Tuesday

Can you clarify if the ability to receive the updated traffic stops then or just the inbuilt apps?

When I activated it it looks like the connected 'safety systems' so the cars ability to call emergency services/breakdown in case of accident is valid until 2030+ (I can't remember the exact date)

The connected infotainment systems such as the ability to download traffic, get fuel prices from petrol stations, number of spaces and prices for car parks etc only lasts for 12 months. After which you have to pay, not sure on prices yet as it doesn't tell you until you renew it and you can't click renew until it comes up to expiry date if that makes sense.

I was told by Skoda head office it was €70 for the infotainment ,traffic petrol etc and €60 for the Remote access for the second year.

I am at the end of year 2 and the TMC info is still working.

TMC (Traffic Message Channel) data is free and comes via the radio - DAB or FM with DAB being better. If you connect the Columbus to the Internet then it downloads live traffic data provided by TomTom from the Skoda servers.

Got my car , my SIM card slot and a 12gb data SIM card.

All installed but not exactly sure what it does. Obviously it gives wylan access to phones tablets etc in the car , up to 8 I believe. Once it’s in does it automatically pick up map updates and travel or is there another degree I need to get to work it out lol

got Skoda connect app on phone though so my phobia about did I lock the car is no longer an issue.

It will have the connected services active including downloading the TomTom traffic data from Skoda's servers. You can view petrol prices, view news if you setup some feeds for it and check parking spaces. You need to set this up by registering.

If there are map updates then it will tell you and ask if you want to download. 12GB is not enough to update the whole map so I would do that via WiFi or using a USB/SD Card with the maps downloaded on a computer.

You know it's connected to Skoda's servers when the little globe icon at the top of the display changes to white instead of red.

Great. Thanks,  just spotted the globe go white. Just registered this afternoon so maybe there is a delay I going live.

Hi there,

I have just got a new superb sportline, I was wondering if anyone can help me.  I'm trying to get the Wi-Fi to work in the car but I'm struggling. I want to use my phone network as I have a 20gb data plan.

Have you put a data sim in the car?

I'm enjoying having a data sim in mine. With 30 Gb of data available every month I'm totally milking the Google Earth navigation!

This car is so awesome.

How much data with a sim card use if you are just getting maps / traffic updates?  Anyway to measure usage?

No I haven't put a SIM in the car, I use the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone and I get the white world pop up and are able use the auto connect. I'm going to France with 2 children and need the Wi-Fi to work so they can watch there tablets. If that makes sense ?

My Vodafone App tells me how much data each of my cards use. It says at the moment my car has used 39Mb but I've been abroad without my car for a few weeks so haven't been using it much at all this past month so it's not really representative but previous months I've used up to 2 Gb in the car for map updates and traffic.

Even though there's some reference to Google Earth in the Columbus menu, I've not actually seen it show maps like this:-

So my question is does your car show this type of map or did you mean that you use Google Maps navigation via Android Auto?

If I enable Google Earth for mapping, and providing I've turned on my phone's WiFi hotspot (I don't have the SIM slot on the Columbus because it was extra in 2018) then I do see maps displayed like that with overlays from the sat nav itself.

But it does need an active Internet connection to show Google Earth maps.

It shows exactly that type of map. But with roads and traffic info (green/orange/red depending on traffic speed) highlighted.

Ill take a pic tomorrow and post it up to show what I mean.

I don’t have an android phone so definitely not android auto.

Hmmm.

I do have a SIM in the slot but didn't think having the hotspot enabled would matter.

The roads pick up the real time traffic as above and not just the TMC version but I'll look forward to the pic and will investigate further tomorrow.
