Hello everyone. I bought my first Skoda two weeks ago. It's a Superb MkIII L&K DSG 2-litre 150 bhp diesel, in a sort of bluey-grey colour, first registered August 2017. I think I've now mastered the basics of the auto transmission (a first for me) and the rest of the myriad of settings. I have one oustanding query though, about the DSG transmission: It has 6 forward gears but every spec sheet and brochure I've seen say that the DSG box has seven gears. Is this right? I should add that I bought it from a car supermarket and not a main dealer, and their knowledge is sketchy to say the least.

If this isn't the place to ask this, perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

Graham, Derbyshire, UK.

Welcome to Briskoda.

I thought all DSG had 7 gears.

Well, as I say, all the spec sheets I've seen say that too, but I did come across one review ( at Honest John's site) that mentioned a six- or seven-speed DSG. I've tried in manual and auto and sixth seems to be the highest ratio.  I'm wondering if the car is a UK spec.

Welcome Graham and congrats on your new Superb!  The 7 speed DSG box only went into the newer Superb from around mid 2017, so probably build week 25/26 or thereabouts.  Yours could be the very last that had the 6 speed units fitted, depending on when the exact build week was.

Many thanks. That puts my mind at rest a little. Just to take things a little further: do you know how to find the build date from the VIN code? Apparently it can be done, but I've no idea how.

Thanks again for your help.

6 Speed DSG is still fitted in the 2.0 TSI 220PS and the 2.0 TSI 280PS. It's also still used in the 2.0 TDI Octavias including the Scout.

Thanks for your help Bowdie. Much obliged.

Just to set your mind further at rest Graham - my 190 TDI DSG was first registered in June 2017 and has 6 speed DSG. If you haven't found it yet, the MkIII Superb owners section is the place we hang out. Loads of good advice from some really knowledgeable people. They've helped me out with all my (mostly stupid) questions so don't be afraid to ask about anything you need to know about your car.

Thanks for that: I'm a lot happier now. All the information I could find on the car suggested it should have a 7-speed DSG, but I found a 2016 brochure which said that  the 6-speed was fitted. (I was worried in case I had an imported car not to UK spec).  I'll have a look at the MkIII Superb section as you suggest.

Thanks again.

PS One of the umbrellas was missing when I bought the car and Motorpoint said they'd send me one in the post.  While I was typing this a parcel arrived from Motorpoint. It contains what looks like a parcel shelf for a small hatchback!
