Mk3 FL SEL 1.5tsi dirtier rear ?

Featured Replies

Don't think it's my imagination, the rear of my mk3 FL gets very dirty quickly. I know the roads are mucky but I don't recall my previous Octavias getting so dirty. Even after a short run the hatch handle is dirty. My other half is always complaining about it! ( No inuendu intended)

The only change on the rear of the FL is the small aero spoiler on the edge of the hatch. Could this be the cause?

Anyone else with a FL SEL spec car noticed this ?

Do you have mud flaps on the car? Did you have them on the previous cars?

Yes and yes.

The tyres may have something to do with it.  I noticed when I had my Continental TS 860's fitted that the rooster tales were far more evident and that In the wet the rear window was getting drenched.  I wouldn't notice necessarily it was getting dirtier as I do a lot of cross country driving.

As the Conti TS860 tyre has a water dispersing design I put it down to the water being chucked out from under the tyre ..... not a technical explanation, just what I assumed was happening :)

Agreed, run Goodyear winters. The amount of water they shift is huge. Another reason for switching tyres / wheels for winter months.

No, there is one more substantial change on the FL: The rear tracking is wider, which means the wheels pop more out of the arches and, probably cause what you are mentioning ;)

Good point. I read about the change. Is it significantly altered that it would throw up more muck from the tyres ?

I have winter wheels and tyres on at the moment.

Hadn’t realised all models got the wider track. Thought it was just vRS with 15mm extra width?

Id be surprised if the spoiler has anything to do with it. It’ll be doing heehaw other than a cosmetic change.

Skoda means otherwise!

If you buy the original front spoiler - there is a warning that you MUST have the rear spoiler before the front spoiler is fitted.

I assume that has something to do with aerodynamics?

My pre-FL 1.8 4v4 had the small aero spoiler at the back fitted from factory (without me order it), but I dont know how fast your car is getting dirty compared to mine

Yes, it is like 12-15mm wider on each wheel at the rear, so the wheels do poke out more. And yes, all models are wider - not only VRS.
