Vrs exhaust repair

Featured Replies

Evening briskoda folks.

Im going to be welding up a hole in the rear silencer of my vrs. Car failed mot on this as it was screwing up the gas readings. My question is will i be able to undo the clamp and wiggle this thing thru the rear beam to get it out,the position of the hole at the entry end of the silencer and the proximity to the fuel tank make welding it on the car a headache.i also dont have time to order a replacement box or anything as the car is now sitting with no mot so it needs welded and retested fast.looks as if either the rear box or centre sect has been changed before as there is a sleeved joint between centre and rear the joint is halfway between the bit that turns toward the driver side after it passes over the rear beam.will i be able to thread this tail of pipework over and out?

Thanks

You may struggle to separate the joint at the middle pipe, quite often badly corroded together. It may be easier to split it at a bolted joint behind the cat/downpipe if you can, then wiggle it back as far as you can, alternatively, get a tin of gun gum (not exhaust paste - comes in a flat tin) as that has strands of a glass fibre type substance in it to reinforce the repair. Can you slap that on to get it through the test?

@Roberto0787 - From your OP, I'd agree with @octyal about using Gun Gum.

Thanks for your replies guys. The joint/sleeve im on about will come apart easy as i put a new sleeve on it not long ago as old sleeve rusted. I actualy have a fresh tin of gungum but was thinking this might blow thru. Is the bend over the axle too much to manouver out

Not so much the bend, but how fragile the exhaust is where it needs to be repaired. If it is rusty enough to require welding up, then there is a good chance that all that wiggling and jiggling around to remove it may well cause more damage - remember, the back box on these is a big lump. Would it be easier to remove the box and replace with a straight pipe for the MOT? Do a temporary back box delete?

Well i Had a go today.turns out even about 4ft in the air is not high enough to get the box past the axle i even disconected the shocks for a bit extra drop.ended up just lowering exhaust and then welding in place but due to position i couldnt get it welded completely so i tacked a steel plate over as good as possible and doubled up with gun gum anyway.hopefully this temp repair holds thru a fast idle retest tommorow.
