Gearbox Oil Help!

Featured Replies

Hi, I’ve put a valeo solid flywheel conversion in my 2010 VRs TDI (2.0 common rail).   Done a thousand miles or so now and it’s going fine and from cold start you wouldn’t know a difference, apart from..... when it gets up to temperature it gets loud. Sounds very mechanical and metal-ly on acceleration.

Im guessing - when the gearbox oil is warm it’s thinner and it’s the gearbox I’m hearing.  Cars 8 year old now and never had box oil changed. I’m thinking it can’t harm to do it but anyone got any recommendations on what oil to use? Is there something ‘thicker’?!?

Any my ideas would be great!

cheers.

It'll be the flywheel. Almost certain. Iirc the 2.0 tdi in either pd or cr form don't like smf conversions. I can't recall the reason but the earlier 1.9 pd is fine with them. If I was you I'd get it removed asap and fit a new dmf.

I’m not too fussed about the noise, just wanted to make sure everything lubed nicely.

I wanted to try a smf in it, thought the dmf always felt a bit numb and it does drive much better now. Much better response on throttle just around town and bites well.

Are you thinking it’s going to cause some damage or just that I’m not going to loose the noise? I know I’m putting more stress on a few bits without dmf but I don’t do track days and don’t change through the gears like I’m still 17 years old!!

drained my oil @16K  from new and it was burnt crap (very thin)   but little in the way of swarf  my usual supplier is FUCHS from the good old boys at OPIE   great service  (no don't have shares in it)
