Abs fault 00283 front left sensor 003 mechanical failure

Featured Replies

Hi,

After replacing my driveshaft rubber boots it seems the the mechanic didn't torque the bolts to the correct setting.

And yesterday after the abs light turning on, I put vcds on it and it says 00283 ABS Wheel speed sensor; Front left G47

003 Mechanical failure - intermittent.

I took the wheel off just to notice that the brake disk was almost loose, wobbling from the driveshaft bolt.

Lucky we didn't go for a longer drive.

Tightened the bolt to correct torque, put the wheel back, took it for a drive and the error is still there.

Measuring blocks show speed as 0 for that wheel, the rest are fine.

Took the sensor off, looked through the hole to see the reluctance ring, should there be one on the front? Or the joint is magnetic. I couldn't see any ring, just the front of the joint.

Tried a new sensor from ECP and the same error come up.

The wire seems alright, if I just unplug the sensor I get a different error, open circuit.

Any ideas? Can the joint be demagnetiser or something? Or there should be a ring there?

Thanks,

Andrei

All the clamping force on the brake disc is done through the wheel so if the small retaining screw is missing, the disc will be loose on the hub. Some cars don't even have a retaining screw. Was the driveshaft bolt loose?

The pickup for the sensor is in the wheel bearing, so you are probably looking at a new bearing.

Yep, the driveshaft bolt was loose.

Took the driveshaft out now, it seems the bearing is gone, like you said.

Thanks for your quick answer.

I'll replace the bearing.

Andrew page has the Fag kit at 74.99.

Seems alright.

Thanks again for answering so quick.

Make sue you fit a new bolt as they are one use only but you will probably get one in the kit

The loose bolt is probably the reason why the bearing failed in the first place as the driveshaft does support it in the hub.

Happy to help

Sounds like you need to find a new mechanic!
