Park Pilot Differences

Featured Replies

What is hopefully a quick question re park pilot, or rather the onscreen display of what the sensors are "seeing".

I have noticed 2 different versions of this, and it would appear that some are missing the side sensors. I have included photos below to demonstrate.

I'm hoping someone can tell me what the difference between the vehicles is, this all relates to L&K models from 2017.

Did the equipment change between MY17 and MY18? Does that explain it or is there an optional extra that adds the side sensors?

Thanks
David

Missing Side Sections

Mine is an MY17 L&K. My display shows what is in the first picture. It does have side sensors.

Isn't it something to do with whether you have the park assist or not? IIRC park assist (autopark) gives the side sensors. Perhaps the second picture is from a car without that option - just a guess.

The ‘extra side sensors’ are the Park Assist system. The two extra sensors in the back are the Blind Spot radars.

Hang on , so the top picture system is called Park Assist and does NOT auto park?

The bottom one is called Park Pilot and DOES auto park?

I'm confused

Top one is Park Assist and Blind Spot - can auto park.

Bottom one is front/rear sensors and Blind Spot. Does not auto park.

Spot on GaSelle. In terms of what you see in the car, park assist has its own button, directly above park pilot. Apologies I could only find a grainy web photo, but you can see it on the right hand side of the gear stick / DSG lever in this LHD car. Obviously it's reversed in the UK model. Top right is park assist, middle right is park pilot in the photo below.

That makes perfect sense, thank you!

The side sensors are just inferred data, in the pictures from the first post the car will have already been moving in the first but stationary in the second. You can watch the side data get filled in as you move, as the car takes the reading from the front and rear sensors, the steering angle and vehicle speed to fill in the blanks. Does not relate to having auto park or not.

Cars with Park Assist has two extra sensors front and two extra sensors rear mounted on "the side".

I have never seen a (VAG) car that shows picture 1 without having Park Assist.

The "side data" shown on picture two relates to Blind Spot.

So yes, it does relate to having Park Assist or not.

This video clearly shows "side data":

Interesting, just looked up some pictures of a car without park assist and it indeed does not have the side sensors.

Still, on mine with the side sensors and park assist, no side data is displayed until you start to move, so it looks just like image two above, if activated just after starting the car and before moving. The 2 centre segments of the display on each side are still inferred.

Thank you so much! This has explained what i was confused around - how could you have 2 different displays on cars with the same equipment options!

So, the side sections appear when the car is moving and has inferred what objects are down the side. Makes perfect sense now.

I guess i should have RTFM:

Variant 3 is a UK L&K then with park assist fitted. Look what it says in the notes section:

You have to move the vehicle in order for them to "fill in" the middle section.

Thank you everyone for helping me understand what i was seeing in different vehicles.

Carpark was empty while leaving work, so i shot a quick video, the contrast makes it a little hard to see but you can make it out as i creep forwards.
