Because you’re the driver. It’s an assistance system, to assist you in keeping between two sets of white lines. It’s not an autopilot, it’s not designed to drive the car for you.

Nobody else responded so it could be that everyone has assumed the same as me. Might be an idea to rephrase the question to try and get to the bottom of you’re issue?

Because you, not it, are the driver. Its job is to help you stay in a lane on a long drive, not to steer the car for you. Saying which, I don't squeeze the wheel, I just hold it.

Lane assist is all well and good and I understand it is a safety feature. Mine has it and it is always switched off. To me this makes people too reliant on tech to do the driving for them and not keeping aware of where the car is on the road. If you are lane straddling frequently then you should either go to specsavers (other opticians are available) or take a break. People managed to drive many years without lane assist and should do for many years to come.
