remapping

Featured Replies

Hi

Thinking about remapping my Superb MK3 2.0TDI (190), 2016.

Have any of you done it?

Will I loose warranty?

How much it will be?

Where can it be done? Anyone know any good place?(near Coventry)

Thanks.

Warranty is always void when you remap a car. Of course in case something broke with the engine. Its almost impossible to hide remap these days. The rest I have no answers for :D I would remap mine too but I have 200.000km warranty so probably not going to do it to keep the warranty. Same 2.0TDI 190HP MY18

Just to give you an idea - See attached.

However - yes the warranty for the engine would be voided.  However are modest power gains worth the potential £500 cost?  Unless you plan on going crazy with your wallet (and don't care about warranty), not sure what the point is of a remap?  Afterall, you can only legally do 70MPH and torque on the 190 is already excellent.

Fuel consumption?

No but I remapped the 184ps TDI in my Leon FR (near enough the same).  It made an otherwise lazy engine quite good and transformed the car.  Mid-range shove would leave most things behind.  I'm not a fan of the 190 (sorry 190 owners)

Will I loose warranty?

Grey area and lots of online folklore.  My friend recently had his 18 month old A6 BiTDI 'TD1' flagged and Audi have now voided his whole warranty, and not just for drivetrain.  His car was scanned when at the dealers for a mechanical, door locking issue and he didn't attempt to even remove the Superchips map with his Bluefin device as he didn't think it would be scanned.  It would have TDI1 flagged regardless, from what I understand.   He tried to argue his case with the dealer but was told Audi are really hot on checking for remaps and modifications at the mo.

Some people say that you'd need to get the manufacturer to prove it wasn't the fault of the remap but I don't think I'd be able to afford taking VAG to court.  Common sense would dictate that a remap wouldn't cause some interior trim to be defective but apparently Audi didn't see it that way. Speak with your local dealer first and ask them how they feel about remaps.    Many dealers wouldn't turn down the warranty work if they could get away with it, easy money for them.  I also spotted a Skoda dealer openly advertising a remapped 150TDI on Autotrader a few weeks ago.

How much it will be?

£300-500 dependent on who you use.

I used REVO and the map and service by the REVO agent was excellent.  No issues in almost 50K miles and I know from tank-to-tank calculations that MPG was improved by 3-5%

Thanks.

If your car is under warranty the better option would be to use a tuning box from someone like DTUK.

I had their CRD3 system fitted to my Octavia 150ps diesel and the result was very good indeed.

Simple fact is a remap will not change the fuel consumption if you drive at the same speeds and in the same way as before. Fact is a car needs a specific amount of fuel and air to maintain a certain amount of speed and a remap or tuning box cannot change that.

Only way to get better mpg is to drive better and or slower.

But if you use the extra power a remap should give you the car will use more fuel.

Have you remapped your car, so you know this from your own experience?

I know for a fact it made mine more efficient; tank-to-tank measurements proved this.   I did not alter my driving style just because I had the extra power.  Same route, same time of day, same tyres, same filling station, etc.  The car literally changed from when it was mapped.

Not this car, no need, I knew when i bought it the car was powerful enough and I knew the economy was excellent. Always make sure about that before buying. Prefer to use the makers map than that from a man in a shed. Too much to risk with the warranty and insurance premium increases.

I did have a previous car chipped but it was not for extra power or economy, it was to improve pickup which was noticably poorer than the identical car that I had replaced. VAG had changed the injection system to lower emissions, power and torque remained the same but torque was at higher revs and low down pickup was poor. It did what i wanted and according to the dash the economy was better. But over a few tankfuls it was quickly apparent that the re-map was very good at reporting much higher mpg than the truth. Since then I ahve read plenty of reports about this on forums.

So are your mpg improvements from actual calculations over several tanks or from the dash fuel confuser.

  • 2 weeks later...

Interesting I'm with you penguin on this. I posted a remapping question a while ago and was reading up on how to get the most of the 2 cylinder mode on the 1.4 tsi ACT.

I've had this for about 2 weeks now. My road to work is the same and very much the same traffic wise. I can cruise at 30,40 and 60mph with minimal braking and stop start!

I read a post on fuel economy and can see that in sports mode the engine drops gears BUT holds the 2 cylinder mode for longer!  and at roughly 51mpg -say 70mpg. It will enter it at 10mph and from cold virtually.

On the Eco setting when in 2 cylinder mode it varies from say 80mpg-150mpg but easily drops out of it and won't enter 2 cylinder mode as frequently and  not until 20-30mph and not until the car is upto temperature.

So did some tests and checked my app and in sport mode both going home and to work i gained 3-5mpg average.

Yes in Eco i i was stupidly careful it was better but in normal driving it wasn't at all.

SO a remap in my opinion will provide low end torque increase especially upto 2100rpm where ECO mode forces an upchange in the gears thus then giving more torque to hold the car in ECO mode and in 2 cylinder mode for longer with better mpg than when in sport mode !  The Software testing of ECO mapped up against the engine output in my opinion doesn't match well. In sports it's good but i do feel that the ECO software setting isn't mapped and configured great to the engine output. My car is still only 700miles in so early days love to hear if others can get theirs in eco mode to hold 2 cylinders for a good while and over minor hills. Mine seems to drop speed with me trying to keep it in 2 cylinder mode or drop back to four cylinder over a tiny weeny uphill.

Well  that's the hope and i really do think that with a careful foot which i have and smooth driving a remap on a petrol will make a difference.  From my experience so far it's all about getting off the line quick and into 2 cylinder mode asap!  But in eco mode it just doesn't seem to do it enough so will a remap just to get another 70nM of torque say make the difference. My gut says it will but based on warrenty i'll probably not try this anytime soon!

PS remaps from the man in the shed are things like Bluefin! These are superchips who actually make the VAG standard maps! Manufacturers just go for a generic suit all climates map whereas a remap is a tune for your geographical location and fuel quality! I would never drive a bluefin or Revo tuned car in Australia or the gulf for example but uk and Europe it's all good!

Love to hear from people with the 1.4 tsi ACT

Cheers

James
