Can anyone describe how this is done, without breaking anything.

Do you mean the centre console? If so easy! Inside the rear cup holder is a small plastic cover, pop off to reveal (from memory) a Phillips head screw, unscrew, push the console toward the front of the car and lift upward and over the handbrake and that's it!
