After some recommendations.

 

Trying to get a two player driving game for an Xbox One. It's for me to play with the boy wonder.

It's got to be two player split screen on the one console not online multi player.

 

Also looking for something not too realistic since he's only 7. 

 

Ideally something like Burnout since he likes a big crash but that's only one player. Or a demolition derby type game.

Burnouts were defo 2 player. Losing at Burnout Paradise to my 9 year old finished me as a game player. The driving games were the last ones I could beat him at.

I had burnout 2 on PS2 that was split screen. I’ll go through all my PS1, 2 and 3 games and see what I can find .....

Burnout Paradise is not splitscreen I checked that one.

 

The Forza games do have split screen but apparently they are not normal races, just the two cars.

 

He likes Mario Kart because it's split screen and he gets to be on the same team as me. Bless him he doesn't want to kick my ass yet.

 

I let him play Forza Horizon 3 recently, he just bombs around in a Lambo knocking AI cars off the track. He blew about 5M of my in game credits on weird cars.

That link that camelspider provided has some useful ones   There aren't many 2-player split screen games where you are on the same team.  AKAIK

Yeah it's not so common now. Can't sell gold licences with split screen.

 

I've still got my original Xbox with burnout. Might just have to set that up for him.

I think Forza (Not 7) + horizon both have split screen and you can race with AI cars. You can set it up in the race settings to be on a team as well i think. Cant remember the car limit, i think it was something like 18 cars in normal Forza and maybe 10 in Horizon. Me and my friend made custom liveries and changed the numbers so we could pretend we were our own race team 

 

F1 might be a bit realistic but has a great co-op season mode. Dirt 3 (rallying) has split screen too i think, great fun. Only other one i can think of is Trackmania (more mario karty)

 

Wreckfest is one to keep an eye on. It's not out on console yet but is very crashy! Not sure about split screen on that one however. 

Some of the mobile platforms have excellent multiplayer modes.

 

Once spent a 12 hour flight delay playing Burnout with 5 other players on PSPs.

 

6 player racing with no AI cars to mess it up.
