Tyre Noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I am a new owner of a 2018 year Fabia 1.0TSI which is fitted with the 215/40x17 Bridgestone Potenzas.

There is a reasonable amount of road noise (easily drowned out by the infotainment system) but I was wondering if the noise is a product of this wheel/tyre combo or if the Fabia 3 is a bit prone to road noise.

Viewing a few  road test vids, they never seem to mention it hence my query.

Just different tyres different noises, and you have pretty wide tyres for a Fabia which have more grip / friction / traction so more road noise is a possibility and as it is the Bridgestone Potenzas are noisy.

Have you tried the tyre pressures a few psi higher or lower to see if there is any change in the road noise?

I only run lightly loaded so have the tyre pressure at the recommended 32psi

The good thing to do, but it can sometimes be an idea to try just a psi or 2 up or down and see if you are aware of a change in the road noise.

Easy enough if you put them up 2 psi to try, then  you can let them down again to your chosen pressure.

I have had 3 Fabia's -admittedly these were Mk11's,

The last one had (unfortunately) Bridgestone Turanza's. The fabia is not the best car for road noise suppression, but I could not live with the noise from the bridgestone tyres, it drove me round the twist!

It was so bad that I changed them all after approx 9000 miles, although they looked like new. All three fabia's were on 195x55x15 tyres. It was the low rumble that was so very much in evidence.

Changed to Goodyear efficient grip - what a difference !!!!!!!

Always had goodyear efficient grip on my previous cars. In my opinion they are excellent tyres but are quite a soft compound so dont get the miles out of the tyres. But i would quite happily get a couple of thousand miles less for a softer quieter ride.

My new fabia is on the turanzas and get alot of road noise and can feel the road through the brake pedal, ive reduced the pressure to 2.1 bar all round but hasnt seemed to make much difference.

I changed my Turanza's on my previous Mk 11 to Avon ZV3 with noticeable improvement to road noise.

Always liked the Avon tyres which are pretty mid stream and priced accordingly. Pity they don't still hold that 'made in Britain' tag they used to. ;)

Further experience would indicate the the noise is rather surface dependant; the course chip used in NZ in a lot of situations does generate quite a bit of noise but on a decent surface, there is nothing worth mentioning.

The fabia is not well insulated for sound so you get to hear more of the noises that other cars pretend don't exist.

Just checked and I find NEXEN tyres fitted. Never heard of them. Anyone any experience of them?

Definitely a wheel/tyre combination. I know this because I have a 2017 MK 3 Fabia SE with 185/60 tyres on 15 inch wheels and I wanted to compare the engine note of my MK3 with another Fabia of the same engine spec because I felt it "growled" more than the MK2 Fabia it replaced. I arranged a test drive in another Fabia at my local Skoda garage but this one had low profile tyres. The difference in tyre noise was immediately noticeable as I set off. So much so that I commented to the technician and he agreed that low profile tyres are noisy. Something you have to live with.

Exactly right Brian,I could easily blame my Turanza's for noise when a simple experiment has shown that road surface is mainly the culprit.

On a long smooth tarmac road Im not aware of anything noisy tyre wise.

Drive on a patchy motorway with varying surfaces and it's obvious the road is the nuisance, and as abaxas above says with less insulation the problem is worse.

Hi Bill, Nexen tyres seem to be decent enough. South Korean and are used as OE on VW Skoda cars also on the Porsche Cayenne according to Google!

I have Kumho tyres on mine and like you wasn't sure what these were. Again they're South Korean manufacture and are widely used as OE on Hyundai, Chrysler and the VW group etc.

Both these brands seem to be the right side of mid range tyres and are trusted by some big name manufacturers.

The Nexen 16 inch spare on my mk3 Octavia is incredibly noisy on any surface, smooth or rough, at any speed, 10kph through 80kph when I have had to fit it.

It is a 'spacesaver' on a cheap steel rim (and probably a cheap tyre) but the size is the standard on some models. I dread to think how bad it would be if all four wheels were equipped with them.

One thing is for sure when the spare is fitted there is no way you are going to forget to get the punctured one fixed. It really is that bad.

Definitely agree about the differing road surfaces. Just hadn't heard about NEXEN.

Not great trying to say one tyre is noisier than another I'm afraid. Didn't feel the tyres were noisy per se compared to any others I have had fitted. Happened to look for the brand fitted after reading this thread.

Don't think I'm going to convince anyone I have a Porsche - but they are part of the same family!
