Maintenance contract?

Featured Replies

I am taking out a 4 yr lease (18k miles a year) and have been offered a maintenance contract (incl. tyres) for £47/mt. There is so little information on service prices, tyre costs, likely wear and tear items I am finding it really hard to work out if it will be good value.

Any thoughts would be very welcome...

I have a Skoda Service scheme that's based on cheaper servicing for a car that's more than 3 years old that's well over £30 month for 15,000 miles a year (10k servicing) including brake fluid changes, air con servicing, MOT's etc)

Tyres alone could cost quite a bit - depending on the size/price/expected mileage but on the back of a fag packet if you do 18k miles/year and your tyres last 18k miles(may last more - or may not!) and your tyres cost £123 each (example price on Blackcircles for Michelin 225/50 R18 95W) then thats £492 / year on tyres or £41 month

On that basis £47 / month doesn't seem too bad

I had a service and maintenance contract on my Yeti, 8k miles at £22 a month I think. I did the maths and the monthly fee worked out as a fair monthly division of the service costs and extras such as brake fluid change, air-con service, 1st MOT etc that would be needed in the first three years of ownership.

If you add tyres into the equation you need to be careful as fair wear and tear is not I believe included. Punctures and damage are up to a full set of tyes over the contact time. the dealer should be able to give you a detailed print out of what is and is not covered.

I had a service/ maintenance plan on my Octavia.  About £20 a month.  But I didn’t this time.  I only ever had to replace one wiper blade in 21/2 years. One minor and one major service. So that’s £600 all together I spent.   I don’t think it’s worth it in my opinion.  The services and wiper blades if bought separate were no where near that cost.  I guess it depends on mileage and how you drive.

I must admit I used the maintenance side of the contract, making sure I got air-con, brake fluid, front and rear wipers, remote control battery. Adding these to the three services and MOT meant I was in credit.

If you are on long term servicing which is about every 18k then you are looking at around £240 per service (based on what I paid for my Octavia 2.0TDi DSG), I do around 15k a year but not much motorway nearly all town driving so I opted for budget tyres on the Octy when I changed the fronts £100 a pair fitted by tyres on the drive (225, 45 R17's) only needed to change them once and they were still legal when the car went back after 45k, never changed the backs in the 3 years I had it.

Looking at your signature you have ordered the 4x4

You have to be careful about uneven tyre wear, if you get more than about 2.5mm tread diff the circumference differences can stress the 4x4 system

You should be looking to swap front to backs at 10k miles which might be extra cost, otherwise you will end up with uneven worn tyres and may need to replace all 4 (but they may not cover replacing those with more than 3mm)

Check what you are getting covered on that tyres contract

Always remember you set up a standing order and transfer same £47 to a deposit account, and pay when required from that.  You need to consider if £2256 (£47 x 48 months) is likely to be more than actual spending

Sounds like very poor value against likely actual costs.

Whilst looking into PCH leases I found that the maintenance charges seemed very high for personal customers. On my outgoing company car, a SEAT Leon 1.6TDi on a 3yr 18K mile contract, the maintenance charge was £31 inc VAT. Allowing 10% for inflation over 3 years, I'd expect a cost of around £33 pcm for a similar car, through a company scheme. So £47 for your Karoq seems high, especially if you factor in that any mechanical problems in the first two years are covered by warranty. Of course the lease company are hedging their bets against an expensive mechanical failure that they have to put right for you in the last two years, so on a purely expected cost comparison it will seem high as there is some 'padding' against a major cost. This is the gamble they take offering a maintenance contract and the gamble you take by not taking one.

I don't think the maintenance has much to do with warranty, which is 3 years

Okay, we are going with the contract. The logic is as follows and I appreciate things could be done slightly cheaper but....

4 tyres (max 800)

4 x service, 2 x minor, 2 x major  (max 1000)

MOT  (40)

Brake pads and discs (max 300)

Total 2140 /48 = 44mth

This doesn't account for minor items like wipers, bulbs etc or air con service, day oil change or 4x4 oil change that might be needed and would be covered.

Borderline decision but as it's fixed for 4 yrs it means no unexpected bills unless I break something which is fair enough.

I've attached the brochure in case someone sees an exclusion I really should have spotted.

Thank you all for your advice. It's really helped with a tricky decision

Just one replacement set of tyres during 72,000 miles? Which is 36,000 a set. I just about managed that on my Superb II but that had 205/55 r16's where I've found the tall profile lasts much longer

Someone in the thread mentioned wear and tear of tyres not included - is that the case or are tyres fully included.

I'm sure there will been extra expenses so deal sounds OK

Fair point, two sets at least (maybe even 3) but yes, at this price they are included.

Thanks, that makes it a no brainer for me. Especially as they have a 2.0mm tread limit rather than the legal 1.6mm
