Columbus - no sound on newly fitted unit

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just fitted a MIB2 Columbus in place of my MIB1 Amundsen, I was expecting a 'component protection' error and but instead I have no sound on the unit and the following error

"The sound settings will be available again at the end of the phone call or announcement"

The volume control does nothing. Has anyone seen this error before? I have tried the reset (hold power for 10 seconds but that did not work)

So who fitted this and what was done to sort out the component protection?

Me. Nothing yet.

How are you getting the CP issue resolved then? Main dealer?

seems like its locked in a loop thinking either theres an active call or the nav is making(or thinking) its an announcement,

have you tried to do a reset (press and hold the power button till it turns off and boots up again)

Yeah, around £100 they say. Strange thing is I had no CP errors and everything else works including sat nav and car setup features?!

Yeah tried that. I'm sending it back as faulty, the eBay seller agrees something is not right with it.

Sounds like the same eBay seller who sold me one which had that exact same fault. I sent it back too...

Not from Poland, no. But it was from a Polish lad.

I'd rather not say, bought the unit about 2 months ago and only got around to fitting it today. They offered an exchange so I'll see how that goes.

It's about 2 months since I sent mine back, and it sold again on Ebay fairly quickly...

Does anyone know if the Columbus requires an external amp? Mine hasn't got one so that may have explained the no sound issue

Edited by Dave77

If you have an external amp then you'll have the Canton sound system. I have, and I couldn't get mine to work with either the old amp or the new MIB2 amp I'd bought. If you don't have an external amp then the Columbus would just be coded to work without the sound system and it should work.

I see, cheers, is that an ODIS only coding or can I do it with VAG-COM?

Edited by Dave77

VCDS should be able to code it.

ODIS should only be needed for component protection I think :)

You can't use Vag Com. That program ceased to exist in about 2007 and was replaced by VCDS. You could use VCDS to code the unit though.

Yeah sorry, that's what I meant!

Just in case someone else has this issue and finds this post. See halfway down this post which suggest the issue could have been component protection

If this is not the case for a control unit, then the component protection is activated in this control unit, which has an impact on its function. For example, a classic symptom of CP for the infotainment unit (i.e. J794) is for the sound to be permanently muted (the unit otherwise works OK, but without sound). Another example is when the Dashboard module is locked by CP -all of the lights and the two clock dials permanement flash on/off and the center display keeps flashing the message "safe CP"!

I'll write up my Amundsen(+Canton) -> Columbus retrofit-adventure on a separate post (coding, installation, problems, seller etc.) a bit later (maybe to the end of that long Columbus retrofit -post), but, I think I had some of the same issues you're facing now.

1) Your unit probably was coded for external amplifier (Canton sound system) and not for basic speakers (- or the other way around, can't remember when I got that message).

2) Some of those Ebay units wont show "CP Active" -message on screen but with VCDS you'll find it still active (but doesn't seem to affect anything) - that seems the "no CP" -workaround but I'm not sure.
3) I had MIB1 Canton Amplifier [8V0 035 223], and confirmed, it doesn't work with MIB2 Columbus - You'll need second generation amp [81A 035 223] or [3Q0 035 466 A].

4) Active component protection on amplifier causes sound to come out only from the driver door. MIB1 amp causes the volume button to have no effect.

Re-read the thread, fixed some logic, removed some rant.

This would be interesting to read. My MIB1 Bolero to MIB2 Amundsen swap was easy going as neither my car nor the donor car the stereo came from had Canton (seeing the car before buying the parts was very helpful!) but it’d be interesting nonetheless. People talk to me about a Canton retrofit, but it sounds like too much hard work for little gain in my case. I’d tick the £500 option box on a new car, but I would rather spend the £500 on aftermarket bits now. If a Canton sub box came up it’d be a good place to hide some of the new gubbins haha :)

#2 is what I ended up with, a pre-coded Columbus MIB2, everything does work but as you say VCDS still gives CP warnings. I didn't go for the amp, the sound quality for me is a vast improvement over the MIB1, I wasn't actually expecting such a difference. It is alot to spend but I'm keeping my Amundsen and will swap them back when it comes to trade in time, and hopefully  recoup some of the money selling the Columbus on!
