About to buy 4yr old Octavia, advice welcome

Featured Replies

Newbie here, so go easy.

Also I know little about Skodas or cars in general.

Going to test drive a 4yr-old Octavia next week. Pretty sure I'll like it and want to buy. This is from a group dealership that sells a number of marques.

I am paying cash.

Looking at similar age, mileage cars on cargurus, the price looks ok.

Any tips for negotiation? How much can I get the price down? What can I expect to pay for a warranty on a car with x thousand miles? What can I ask them to throw in, if anything?

Apologies if these are naive questions. I've only ever bought bangers before.

Thanks in advance. Looks like a great forum.

Welcome to Briskoda.

If it is a group dealership, it is more than likely they will offer maybe a two year warranty, worthwhile taking out GAP insurance as well, but have a look at the Briskoda GAP insurance where you can find details on this site.

If you were like me when I test drove my Fabia vRS many years you will buy it!

The Octavia is a cracking car.

Is it a petrol or diesel you are looking at?

What group is it? This may help answer your questions a bit better.

In answer to questions - Diesel.

Can I name the group? It's got a dozen dealerships in the Midlands with only one dedicated to Skodas. Mostly they sell French and Japanese.  I expect that makes it clear.

So what will I pay for a 2-year warranty? This car has around 30k miles.

Check if it has had the emissions 'Fix' applied, if it has ( which it probably has) my advice is don't touch it with a bargepole, dealers are desperate to offload them as there is a widely publicised class action lead by Slater & Gordon being persued against VAG group for the problems related to the emission lies on 2008-2015 diesels. The fix causes pretty well documented problems with the EGR valve, injectors and DPF, leaving customers with cars that are spending weeks or in some cases months in the workshop with the technicians all but scratching their heads......you asked!!!

I had a 2010 Octavia VRS diesel CR170 and it was pretty much trouble free for 8 years but I never had the fix applied, put the letter from skoda straight in the bin!!

Thanks all. I have taken ownership of this car and pretty happy so far. Front Assist problem as documented elsewhere. Not sure whether I can be bothered to get it fixed as the Skoda dealer is a far distance away.

Glad to hear you are happy with the car, wishing you many miles of trouble free motoring.
