Check Coolant Level Error - But coolant level is fine

Featured Replies

I've got a (2013) 1.6 TDI and the check coolant warning is coming on intermittently when I start the car.  I've checked the coolant level and its well above the low level mark and the engine temperature seems to be ok.  Has anyone else experienced this before or got any suggestions on what I need to check?

Thanks in advance.

I had it on my MK 2 Oct last year, the sensor in the header tank was faulty.

Thanks, I'll get it checked!

yep, faulty sensor seems the logical cause if there is enough coolant in the header tank.

I had a similar problem this winter. Started car, coolant light would come on very shortly after moving off. If I stopped the engine then started again then it seemed to be ok, then it wouldn't come on again for the rest of the day. Next morning, same problem.

I checked the coolant level when the engine was cold and it was just a little low - just around the "low" mark on the expansion tank. So I topped it up and haven't had the problem since. I've also checked the level periodically to ensure that its not losing any fluid it is ok.

I can only assume the the level was a little low from new and that the cold weather over winter caused it to contract slightly, just enough to trigger the sensor.

So make sure you check the coolant level on a cold day when the engine is cold before replacing the sensor.

Hi, I am encountering samilar issue on my Mk2 VRS, randomly I will get check coolant warning on my dash and sometimes withouy turning off my engine, I will lift the bonnet to check and the level is at high mark.

Most sites I check say to change the coolant tank which I have done twice but still get the same check coolant warning.

Water pump, radiator is new so I don't think there is any leak there and coolant level does not drop so I don't think there is a leak on the coolant tank.

Any ideas?

I seem to recall a post somewhere, (my memory fails me) where it was suggested the two prongs on the sensor inside the header tank get a coating on them and need cleaning. Might be worth a try?
