I suspect that the OP has/is buying a superb MK3 given the forum in which S/he has posted.

Not something I would want, but sure if you fancy it. Im told it's easier to arrange before first registration than afterwards but don't know if that is true or not.

I bought my Private plate off the DVLA, bought it online, went out and bought some new plates, registered the plate online. I was told online that I could put the plate on my car, ( all done on the DVLA Private Plate web site )  informed insurance company of the change, fitted the plates. sent off the V5 to Swansea,  the DVLA inform the Car Tax department. Total time about 90 minutes.

Every thing was done online and all the Information is kept in your account with the DVLA. If I remove the plate it just goes back into my account on the Web site.

A waste of £400 IMO. Just looks like any other standard plate.

Wife has one that means something to us but doesn't look like a prat plate ;-).

Hassle is changing it over when you change the car . . . . . . . .

Dealers used to do it when there were lots of local DVLA offices but now they have gone most won't.  We now put the number onto retention and get new plates for the old car (normally persuade dealer to provide FOC as they have to make them anyway).  Then take the retention cert in and get new car registered on that number.

But that’s the thing it would be personal to BUD. I have a plate like IJWSIS that’s personal to me and my Mrs, and probably doesn’t make sense to anyone else, but hey, it was only £250.

I’ve never had any difficulty getting the dealer to transfer the number, although this time I had to put my plate on retention and take certificate to dealer at handover  to register new car.
