New Owner of Citigo - a few questions for owners

Featured Replies

Hi

I have just bought a 15 reg Skoda Citigo.  There are some things that I'm not happy/sure about.  I would Like to check with any owners before I take it to the garage under warranty.

1   For the first 10 mins of driving everything is very smooth, then as the engine heats up there is a loud clunk under the car everytime  I change from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and down again( 4th 5th and reverse are OK.)

2   Again once the engine has warmed up (10-15 mins) the sound of the engine changes and makes a spluttering sound when accelerating.

both these things continue until the car is parked for some time.  Then next morning everything is soundless and fine until the engine heats up again.  Is this normal or should I have it checked?

Also I was wondering if it is possible to disconnect the tachometer or what ever its called- that annoying figure on the control panel which tells you which gear you should be in - I find it very distracting and it doesn't always work.

Cheers

Number one sounds as though your hearing the transmission, if this is the case, it’s normal as the car doesn’t have the same sound proofing as more ‘up-market’ cars.

I assume it’s a manual your driving?

Absolutely not doubting your answer, far from it, but why would there be no noise until the car had warmed up and only in 1-2-3 gears yet be perfectly OK 4-5 ?

It’s a good question and I was questioning it myself, but in my own Citigo I hear it more in 1st,2nd and 3rd. Mostly likely due to the fact they get used more regularly?

Warming up, it’s a strange one, that’s for sure...  I’ll be taking more notice on the next few journeys!

@Loganthecat If you could record the noise that would help if it’s possible?

It is trying to teach you how to drive. If you do what it si telling you email get better consumption figures.

If it say change higher gear then change. Or push throttle pedal more. Simple as that. ;)

Thanks for that Emil

I've been driving for 40 years - most of it changing gear by the engine sound or rev counter -  when I reach 60mph on the ring road and the citigo gear change indicates I should stay in 4th - there's something not right,

Well that's odd. Surely something wrong there. I think gear change indicator is always on, you can't turn it off.

(My previous post, "si" should be "is" and "email" should be "might". I wonder why I can't edit it.)

There is an unusually large amount of noise from the Citigo box shifting between lower gears, however, given that describing a sound over the internet is famously difficult, I'd get it checked in case it has a fault.

I concur with Chris GB, both the Citigos I have had had some noise from the gearbox but nothing you could describe as a loud clunk. I cannot think why it would splutter unless you were in too high a gear and gave it too much throttle.

Thank you for all your comments.  I'm beginning to think Emil is right and I am not driving correctly for the engine.  If I change gear very very carefully I can eliminate most of the clunks and the splutter is so intermittent that I can't pin it down to what I am doing wrong.  I will carefully check my speed, gear and revs to see if there is a pattern to it.  Thank you all very much.  Re the recording the noise.  I tried on my phone but it simply couldn't pick up the sound.

I will give it another month before I ask the garage to check it, to see if its my driving technique.

Cheers

Agree with what others have said. My 15 plate had a very audible clunk between gears. More noticeable on 1st 2nd 3rd. I put it down to little sound proofing. Try driving over gravel; sounds like you're being machine-gunned!

New car much quieter in that regard.
