Warm up time?

Featured Replies

Evening.

Had a service and mot yesterday and noticed today that the car seems to warm up faster than before. 2011 vrs petrol. ODB reports start temp at 28, dash shows below 50.  Up at 75 after just a couple of minutes (dash already showing 90). After a few more minutes shes up to 98 and never gets any hotter. Dash still shows 90 and the oil temo rises more slowly, finally settling around 98.

How quickly does everyone elses get to temp? I'm presuming if there was a problem with the water pump or coolant it would overheat quite quickly?

Cheers, M

The dashboard temp display deliberately lies and shows 90 over a wide range of acceptable coolant temperatures from about 75 onward, and only climes above 90 when there is something to worry about. This has been the case on VAG cars for decades.

Settling at 98 might be an indication of a failing temp sensor or start of another problem, like the thermostat or collapsing hose.

Mine is a diesel so warms up more slowly but in today's temperatures it takes about 10 minutes. In winter and town traffic it can take half an hour.

The second thermostat opens when coolant 103 and over, so as you see 98 in the tool and dash shows 90 it seems to be ok.

Depending the out temps nowadays it works with the one thermostat.

If you get in city drive then it may be operated as coolant will get hotter.

Oil temp when under normal driving is around 95-99 degrees so not bother you.

For my diesel temperature ~98 degrees is a common thing in summertime. Dash always shows 90 when warmed up. As it's a diesel then it warms up not as fast as a petrol car.

My father's 1.6 MPI dash shows 90 when probably my 2.0 TDI only started to show some signs of warming up :)

Thanks for the replies all.

I guess the recent hot weather has made a difference and I've been more conscious of the dials due to the service!

Cheers
