Columbus only partly working

Featured Replies

Don't know if this should be here or the ICE section but let's see how it goes.

The Columbus unit in my Superb has recently developed a fault. Whenever I press the "Media" button I just get a message saying "System starting" but it never does.

Also if I press the "Map" button after a delay I get a message indicating a CD/DVD fault, no navigation.

My first thought was that it was a HDD problem but that doesn't address why I don't get the media screen which would allow me to select any media devices (CD/DVD, SD card, BT) so now I'm thinking the media devices are peripheral to the main unit (even though they are in the same box) and it is the interface unit which has a problem

Either way I have an issue and just wondering if anyone has had similar issues and if you managed to solve it.

Every now and again the system works as it should but after stopping the car and re-starting it has normally gone again. The CD behaves OK, if I insert a CD it will autoplay without needing the media screen to select but needs to be re-inserted each time the car is re-started. 8f I force BT to autoplay this also seems to work.

Failing a fix id appreciate suggestions on a replacement unit, ideally a direct replacement which would interface with the steering wheel controls and MFD. Navigation not too important as I usually use my phone.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Is your unit an older one with a small "speaker & letter i" on the top right hand side button, or do you have a "microphone" button there?

In any event, it sounds like a software corruption, but sometimes it's critical and can't be repaired.

Hi Rusty, it is the later unit (IIRC with SSD) I believe.

Does it have DAB radio or is it a standard unit?

If it's a later one then good chance of a repair if you wanna send it to me.

Hi Rusty,  I've PM'd you.

The issue sounds mostly similar to the fault I had, which happened to be identical to the fault described in the two threads below.

In my case, after two years of having the fault, it miraculously cured itself one morning and has been working fine ever since. I didn't do a single thing to try and cure it. Instead, driving to work one morning, I heard what appeared to be a small piece of metal falling down behind the dash. I thought this strange and out of curiosity hit the 'Media' button on my Columbus and the whole unit was working like new again. All my old address data was back, all the music on my hard-drive was there again, and the sat-nav was working.

NZVRS below had the exact same fault as me and a similarly miraculous complete recovery. In his case he had taken the unit apart and put it back together again. Suddenly started working fine again.

Should your fault be the same, then maybe the above experiences can help rule out some of the fault modes.

It's a unit I supplied to him last year. It'll be repaired FOC.

Super. Nice one Rusty.

Posted it anyway just for the knowledge pool.
