Octavia 1.8 20v auto gearbox

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me how I check the oil level in my gearbox? Its obvious I have a leak and now the gears are suffering, but once the gearbox has warmed up, the problems reduce. When cold it just wont select gear, then it snatches in and drops out? I'm sure its just oil as I've found a patch under the box. Any ideas please?

Isn't it better to just pop into your local dealer and have them find the leak?

Oh, and welcome to the forums :)

Yes thanks, I did that 2 weeks ago and the earliest they can fit me in is the 17th. Its just got worse and I'm trying a method of overcoming the problem until I get it in to the dealer

i'm afraid that only a dealer can check the gearbox oil correctly with specialist tools and by the sounds of your problem it is either low on oil or gearbox will have to be replaced.

Your description suggests an oil (ATF?) leak. This shouldn't happen. I haven't noticed any oil patches under my car, in 26,000 miles.

Also, the "snatch/drop out" symptoms suggest an abnormally low ATF pressure - which is (most likely) due to a low fluid level.

I'm surprised that your dealer can't fit you in until the 17th for what sounds like a serious problem. Is the car still under warranty? If so, I suggest you contact Skoda Customer Services - they should be able to "lean on" your dealer to fit you in sooner.

BTW, welcome to Briskoda  Nice to see someone else has the common sense to drive an auto. ;)
