Chassis/handling opinions please

Featured Replies

Good morning.

I have covered just short of 900 miles in my Sportline 190 estate. There is a little something niggling away at me and I’d like your advice and opinions.

When the car runs over bumps there seems to be a slight amount of side to side wobble coming from the near side rear. It could be that as the car is new to me I’m being over sensitive, it could be that coming from a Fiesta ST maybe the chassis is just not as stiff in the Sportline and I have yet to get used to it, or it could be that there is something not right.

It seems more pronounced on the near side, the off side seems to ride the bumps with only up and down movement but I’m sure there is latral, albeit very slight movement after the NSR has been over an imperfection in the road.

When i I washed it I noticed that it appeared to be sitting slightly lower on the off side (My drive is nearly flat but not perfectly flat) so I’m wondering if that’s anything to do with it.

Does it have self levelling suspension in the estate versions, if so could it be playing up.

Any ideas or or suggestions will be a great help.

I have an SEL - and don't have any unsettledness except over really rough ridges in the road (certain badly laid motorways).

Could it be the PDI wasn't done correctly and the Transport stop may be in place on one side?

I don't believe the Superb Estates come with Self-Levelling suspension - I know mine hasn't.

I would get it to the dealer ASAP in case its something more serious than a transport stop.

Yeah, definitely check for transport blocks, not the first or last time this will have happened, although not really a Skoda-specific issue.

Good guide here.

There are no transport blocks, I had the wheels off for a wheel and arch detail so I have ruled that one out

Think you should take some photos of the "not-levelled-ness" in case you need to show the dealer the issue with the look.  You could go and test drive another Superb 3 (probably best if its a sportline) at the dealer for comparisons?

A quick update. I called the dealer and I told them about the slight wobble, the slight height difference at the rear and told them that the wheel is everso slightly off centre. They straight away asked if I had hit any potholes. The front wheels came off another car prior to me picking it up as the originals had received a poor refurb. Once the service advisor was told that, it was booked in for a visual check of the 4 wheel stations and then a wheel alighnement. Hopefully, that will uncover any issues and sort it out.

Car went in today. They did a wheel alignment and they were well out, the fronts by a long way. The result is, the wobble over the bumps has gone. All in all, a result.

Poor show that it wasn't right from the factory.

In their defence it had done 4K when it was delivered to me. I am surprised that it’s not part of the used car PDI process though
