Fuel Filter change 1.6tdi

Featured Replies

Due in another 6000 miles, this should be a simple job, one which I have done on other cars several times.  (Usual procedure on VX's was remove fuel pump fuse, start engine, wait until it stalls to de-pressurise system, change filter, put fuse back, wait a few moments with ignition on the re-pressurise and - job done!)

However the Erwin documentation states that the system needs bleeding after changing the fuel filter, using something called "VAS" whatever that is.

Is this a sledgehammer-and-nut problem, is there a way around it or is it effectively a main dealer job? I don't want to invest pots of money and learning into tools/software I'll probably only need once (or twice), and for what should be such a simple job

Cheers - Richard

Wot, nobody knows?

On a CR TDI the correct procedure is to take the filter out (no need to depressurise) and replace it, helps if you top it up with diesel.

You then run the lift pump with VCDS a few times, then you run the aux. fuel pump a few times. This bleeds any air out of the system as an air lock in the HPFP can cause wear pretty quickly.

Most people wing it just by topping up the filter with as much fuel as possible so to limit the amount of air being introduced into the system.
