Buying my lease (PCH) Octavia

Featured Replies

One of the disadvantages cited for PCH vs. PCP when I signed-up two years ago was that it wasn't possible to buy the car at the end of the term.

It was possible for a family member or friend to buy it, but not the person named on the lease.

It wasn't clear to me at the time whether this was legislation driven, or a deliberate deterrent from Skoda to ensure enough 'quality' used cars were made available to their franchised dealer network.

Anyhow, fast forward two years, my PCH is due to end in a month or two. I just received a letter from BCA (British Car Auctions) on behalf of Volkswagen Financial Services actively encouraging me to request a quote to buy the car.

Interestingly, it explicitly says that I can choose to buy the car if I wish, as well as friends and family etc.

Perhaps Skoda UK feel that they have enough used Octavia's out there at the minute!

Think I'll request the quote, purely out of curiosity...

Followed the instructions and got an immediate quote.

The car is factory standard and has just over 17,000 miles on it...

Anyone want to buy a manual 150PS diesel Octavia Scout off me?

£14,500 for cash :D

That's good to see something in writing and it gives me some hope that I might get the chance to buy mine at the end too - hope so, as I love it! Thanks for sharing.

Not sure if it's a recent change in policy at VWFS but quite a few people on pistonheads have also reported the same.

Exact same car on Autotrader with another couple of thousand miles on it, from a non-franchised dealer.

£15,390...

Or £16,290 from a main dealer...

So assuming its in perfect nick you can sell it to WBAC for £423 less than VWFS want to sell it to you for?

Yep, although I was hoping it was the other way around.

Give VWFS their £13,923 and sell it to WBAC for a profit :D

Try tootle.com

Getting pestered by WBAC is enough, tootle's dealer network chasing me I can do without. Interesting concept for selling a car though!

Great thread! Interesting to see what actual price the lease company are willing to settle for.

Worried tho that you're getting confused buying and selling a car? If the true selling price is £13500 then VWFS are only making a £423 profit.  The question you should be asking is where else can you buy a similar car for £13923? Seems a reasonable deal.

What would I do?   Well in my experience, WeBuyAnyCar have never given me the best price for my cars - I've sold to WeWantAnyCar.com  and  recently, ArnoldClark's car buying service - both were quoting nearly £1000 more than Philip Scholfield's employer.  I'm sure VWFS already have a price for their car but I'd try it on....   why not get a price from WeWant and ArnoldClark, and if it is more, contact VWFS, send them your WeBuyAnyCar quote of £13500 - ask if they're willing to sell for that price, and then sell your car to Arnie or WeWant

I've no intention of buying the car, we've a Kodiaq on order, I was simply curious to see what the price would be.

I agree, the price is very reasonable, my proposal to buy it and try to sell it for a profit was a little tongue-in-cheek!

It is reassuring to see that VWFS are keen to make life simple for themselves and have us buy their cars rather than push them through auction.

Well, in four hours the price has increased by £427 to £14,350!

No wonder Mr.Schofield looks so happy, your paying his commission!:D

I wonder how this compares to having taken out a PCP  or purchase in the first place?   If you buy at that price how much would you have paid in total as compared to the original list price?

The PCP price I was quoted 2 years ago on this car was > £3,000 deposit, £285 x 35 (£9,975), £11,500 balloon, total = £24,475.

On the 2 year PCH I paid a £2,548.66 deposit followed by 23 x £100 monthly payments, total = £4,848.66.

So the car has depreciated by £10,125 (£24,475 - £14,350) over two years (£5,062 per year).

I've paid £4,848 in total to drive the car for two years.

So £5k less than the PCP?

  • Author

Not quite, the PCP was over 3 years, the PCH was 2 years.

I meant £5k less to purchase the car outright...

Was 24475 the actual list price?

Presumably a discount will have been available on that, but even so £5k is a quite a big difference.

It does seem that leased cars are discounted at a level the individual punter buying can't even get close to.

In reality if VWFS are making any money they must surely only have "paid" about £17K for your car.

Im in a similar situation. My vrs TDI is at end of lease in July and have been given a price of 14000. Its a 16 plate with 31000 miles on it. Im not buying it though and have an order for a new vrs TDI for a bargain price!

I guess the burning question is if you are intent on buying a car are you better to lease it for two years then hope for a good price to buy offer at the end of term than to buy outright?

I guess you are never going to be able to guarantee the offer price before the end of term, so you could have to be prepared to walk away if the deal turns sour and find another motor.

I can't remember, I'm pretty sure the list price on the car at the time was very close to the PCP price, it certainly wasn't much over £25,000.

New list price before any discount (dealer contribution) in a standard colour is £27,230.:o

Prices only tend to go one way!

I'm assuming that's for a standard Scout now?
