Cam belt replacement ( Dayco kit ? or best recommendation please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

ok my cambelt is due replacement as nearly 4 years old ( 09 1.9tdi fl estate ) this has been confirmed by Skoda UK and local Indy garage

so the Indy garage are happy to undertake the job and have sourced a Dayco kit complete with water pump ( I've checked this kit on that well known auction site and they seem to be absurdly cheap

SO

are these kits cheap for a reason or should I insist on something else ?

if something else what recommendations would the learned amoungst you put forward, please

( I'm paying for this out of my hard earned but I don't want to compromise the job for the sake of a few quid !! )

Personally, I would go for Skoda dealer, particularly if you have FSH from Skoda.  This really has the ability to wreck your car if it goes wrong and I wouldn't want to end up as my friend did, with no car.

Friend had car (not Skoda) done by Indy, 6 months later belt snapped ruining engine. Indy blamed parts, manufacturer blamed bad fitting. End result was no comeback and had to buy new car.

Why not insist at the Indy garage that genuine parts are used. Then you get charged less for the labour than you would at a Skoda garage, but piece of mind as to the quality of the parts. You usually get 2 years warranty on parts and work done at a good Indy anyway. That's what I do, genuine parts and use my local good Indy garage to keep down the labour costs.

Hi

firstly car doesn't have full Skoda history, my nearest is DM K***h ( least said from previous experience the better ) so since I've owned the car local Indy has fully maintained it

yes the price is a consideration,

Skoda advertise £389 for the belt and £489 with the pump ( £100 for a pump ? the job has already been prepared ) if they ( skoda ) played fair with their customers I'd agree that it might pay to use them

which kit do Skoda fit ?

It is usually a Gates kit, but re-boxed in VAG packaging.

INA are good kits, I would go for your Indy that's maintaining it as they would do a good job as your a loyal customer !

I bought a genuine cambelt kit, waterpump and coolant from jct600 on eBay for £142. Make sure your garage gets the cam timing spot on to give torsion value of  0+/- 0.5.

I need my cam belt doing on both my vrs one is older and I had a new cam belt done around 4 yrs ago at Indi garage cant remember what kit it was

but know it was around £130 inc water pump ,

and I have one that is 4 yrs old low miles but will get it done next year .

I personally wouldn't buy an original if they are known by Skoda to go because they are 5yrs old , the other kits are made to same spec as for other cars that

go by milage normal around 100k , to be safe id go for a none original cheaper and probably better kit , have an Indi first it and get it done every 5 yrs until car is worthless

than a cam belt change. I did want to get a Bosch kit but can't find one I know all their OEM stuff is good quality . Disks / pads I always buy Pagid very hard wearing last ages

had my disks pads changed 5 yrs ago and 40k miles they just went through MOT no advisories at all and they still look ok although the coating has now worn and they show very minor rust in the centre , nothing compared to the 2 yr old Skoda ones that were fitted and had done 27k and were totally scored and badly rusty . They only grip I have with the cars new is the disks pads and tyres ( rd noise on brimstone tyres was awful )
