Put my car on a weighbridge

Featured Replies

Was down a scrap metal place and managed to blag a free go on their weighbridge. Turns out without me sat in it my furby weighs spot on 1300kg. These are the variations to take into account when it comes to weight.

  • I had half an engine in the boot.... At least +50kg(ish)
  • I had no spare wheel -20kg
  • I had a load of work's rubbish, false floor and stuff on the back seat +25kg(ish)

Aside from that I DID have my rear seats in for a change, and the only other small variations would be like not having the passenger airbag in (wasn't hooked up anyway)

From a rough calculation then, I would estimate I could get my car's kerb weight down to around 1200kg, but going any lower would be pretty tough. I might have to strip the car out and revisit my local friendly scrap metal merchant.

Luckily while I wasn't with the car, no crane picked it up and stuck it on the pile of wrecks there.

So, 1500 inc fuel, fluids and driver then :haha:

That was lucky.

:D @ Phil

:finger: @ Jon

I can't remember the fuel actually - I think it was around a 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank, so quite low. Driver weighs ahem (does maths) 85kg. :)

I refer the learned member to the bra thread :haha:

:P I refer the learned member to a calculator and Lb/kg conversion rates. :D 13.5 stone was 85kg. :D (85.9kg to be more precise so 86kg. whatever :P)

I don't need a belly bra yet (corset would be nice  ), and I have no such nipple/breast problems as in that thread. Nice and firm up top, sagging down below.

So I was right, you had misplaced a 1 from your stated figure

Think I read the calculator as 85.090909090 when it actually said 85.90909090.

Anyway - back on topic! :D

I would like to know the actual weight of:

rear seats complete

passenger seat

spare wheel (14" steel) + tyre.

Ask Shifty - I believe he weighed all the items removed from his car prior to his last go at the ring.

Bathroom scales?

All that hard work and you didnt loose much weight from a std vRS :( 10 out of 10 for effort .

Have you tried the Atkins diet on the car, it might loose a few more kilos

Trying to figure what you mean? Referring to the conversion, or to losing weight from the car? Its just I knew the car would be heavier with the pd130 lump in it. And also the car was pretty well weighed down with bulk when it topped the scales at 1300kg. It should drop to 1250 once I lose the engine bits out the back, and without rear seats, another 20kg I guess. Not much else has been lost really. I bet the FMIC system weighs more than the standard SMIC. :D

why not go the whole hog and get carbon fibre panels, that will lose you some weight, oh and lose the glass windows. :P

Oh and all that heavy ICE will have to go too :D

Why not buy an Octavia VRS Estate? It's pretty much the same weight and still has back seats ;)

Thats because the engine is about 100kg lighter. :D (prob less but you know what I mean :D)

Mike - I have no extra ICE in the car now. Only extra is the door component system, which is now head unit powered. My ICE days are over. I have looked into plastic windows, but it would be dubious if I could make them move like normal glass, and its fairly expensive too. I would save around 40kg+ though, just on the glass!

you could also take out the aircon (if possible) as well as that is heavy, along with the carpets and sound proofing.

I guess it just depends on what you want from the car lol

A degree of normality would be nice. ;) aircon is staying in for sure. If I can get away with plastic windows I will, providing they retain the same function and appearance of glass ones (i.e go up & down still)

Aside from that, I'm not getting rid of carpet and other trim. :P

Strip out the plastic trim from the A, B and C pillars then take a 50mm hole saw to them and cut loads of metal out ;)

You'd reduce the strength of the roof but I'm sure you're sensible enough to not roll the car.........

Take out the front seats and replace them with carbon fibre bucket seats.

Also, you should have had that exhaust made in titanium not steel.

A lot of the above suggestions are just silly.

From competition car preparation experience - remove the glass and replace it with lexan. This will probably be the biggest imrpovement in a road car.

You can lighten things like bonnet, boot etc by drilling holes in the interior sstructure of them with doing any real harm.

Removing the aircon is a daft idea. As is drilling the A, B & C pillars (i kno it was a joke)

If your gonne leave ur rear seats out, take out the belts and all fixing brackets. Prob another 12kg or so to be had there. But at the end of the day on a road car, its always gonna be a compromise.

Carbon panels are very rarely worthwhile. I have carbon panels on my track car and its a very poor weight saving for the expense

For the pod, I removed the plastic bits that hold the rear speakers in - they weighed a fair bit. I wonder if there's any metal behind that material under the bonnet I could drill out, and then replace the material so no-one is any wiser? :D

Something to consider when I'm very bored I feel. ;)

If the fabia bonnet is anything like the Octavia one, it'll be pretty well lightened as standard.

Whats it like without the rear seats then m8, lots of extra road noise and rattles or no different? Only asking because I never have anything in or on my rear seats, only drive on business on my own, and suppose I could drop the rear seats out to save a bit of weight and get a little better fuel economy.

I should really just buy a smart car :D :D

A little more road noise - you basically hear what your boot hears and is normally masked by the seats & parcel shelf. :)

I don't mind the extra noise - The car is loud enough now and I actually enjoy listening to it, rather than it being annoying.

When driving there's no real difference - The back of the Fabia becomes like an estate though. LOADSA room.
