Speedo Needle Not Illuminating

Featured Replies

Last night noticed that the speedometer needle was not lighting up. All other needles working fine, been told that the LCD has probably stopped working. Is it a big job yo replace the LCD and what problems should I look out for if undertaking project?

Yes, does sound like the LED behind the speedo has failed. Unless you are competent with a soldering iron and working with surface mount LEDs then it maybe best left to someone who is, or a business that specialise in fixing clusters. BBA-Reman maybe able to fix this, you send them the cluster but you'll not be able to even start the car until you get the cluster back.

I had dead speedometer needle when I bought my car. After some while coolant temperature needle and fuel level needle also started dieing (flickering).

I started thinking about doing something but as it was said to be rather tricky job then I decided to do nothing. You won't believe but you will soon get used to it :) Seriously.

It will probably be a surface mount LED about the size of a ball point pen tip ! There will be a dropper resistor of about the same size and it could be powered by a transistor of about the same physical size ! apart from the actual LED behind the needle the other components could be anywhere on the PCB (you would have to follow the copper track) and the PCB could be multilayered ! I am into electronics and would have a quick look if my own went but it could be a pain of a job. Cheers Stuart

Yes indeed a very painful job. My rpm needle stopped working and it was an eyesore especially when its night and the whole speedometer is nicely lit and the rpm needle isn't. However, I am not good with electronics and thus I decided to give it to an electrician. Replaced the LED behind and at first glance everything was working good. But upon closer inspection I realized that the replaced LED was a tad brighter! Also the other needles need to be placed properly when putting the instrument cluster back. My temperature needle was not placed properly and now my temp needle is slightly tilted towards the higher side making people who drive my car think the car is over heating!
