245 Diff Type

Featured Replies

Evo Magazine quote:

"...........the vRS 245 is equipped with the Volkswagen Group’s VAQ electronically limited slip differential. Unlike conventional LSDs, or even other e-diffs, the VAQ’s locking element sits outside of the diff cage. Instead, it's positioned to the right-hand side on the driveshaft. An electric pump supplies the VAQ unit with varying degrees of pressurised hydraulic fluid; this oil operates a pack of clutches that can lock the driveshaft to the diff cage, and therefore, essentially, the other driveshaft too. The greater the pressure, the higher the percentage of lock and the closer the speed of the two front wheels......"

Contrary to this, I've seen a number of posts in respect of the 245's "XDS Diff", which, if I'm not mistaken, is not really a diff at all but merely a clever electronically controlled braking system that mimics an LSD.

As ever, Skoda are not exactly forthcoming with technical details so can somebody with the necessary nous, confirm that the 245 IS fitted with a "proper" VAQ diff the same as the GTI PP/Clubsport?

My understanding is that the PFL 230 and FL 245 have the VAQ diff and the rest of the vRS range has the XDS.

....my understanding is that the 230 has the XDS.... hence the confusion :-)

Sasha has it correct. The FL 230 has the XDS only.

The 245 has the VAQ diff, drive faster than you should & still accelerating through a long corner.  You'll be a believer, it's also lots of fun.

FL 230 has XDS, PFL 230 has VAQ :)

Does anybody know what the differences are between the “Front differential lock” settings in individual VRS mode, there is no info from Skoda that I can find other than it says it sets the characteristics of the front axle differential lock, but in the real world what the difference between sport and normal?

SashaGrace, you are correct. The PFL 230 DOES have the VAQ as my PFL 230 has had a new one fitted under warranty. It's about the size of a biscuit tin  ( the VAQ not the car )

Some bedtime reading for you

I think the OPis getting confused between pre FL230 and FL230

Yes the 245 had the proper VAQ differential, as does the pre-facelift 230 "special edition" with all the black bits.

The facelift 230 and the pre-facelift 220 do not.
