Creaking Pan roof

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Has anyone else started to get quite bad creaking sounds coming from their pan roof?

Tempted to get in touch with the dealer as after 5 months I shouldn't be getting this!

Yes.... Mostly on warmer days or when it is parked in the sun. Had it doing it for 2 years on and off. It creaks when being opened. It went into a Skoda dealership (so far) 4 times. The most it was at the dealer was for 2 days so that a 'special grease' could be applied to the seals. The fault being explained that the seals are sticking together when it is closed. It worked for about 6 weeks and started creaking and groaning and generally sounding awful whenever opened.  It has been back since for more grease and still does it.

Mine is a company car and is being returned soon and I have given up on it. My advice, if you have the same fault, is to video it and go straight to SUK, who probably won't care, and then consumer groups, because it appears to be unfixable.

I appear to have forgotten how to spell.

had this on the yeti  a couple of years ago and found there was a service instruction out to rectify it,so there  might be one out on the Octavia, worth asking, nothing to lose

I used to have sun roofs fitted pre air con. Creaking was common in cold weather.

Never wanted them again - especially now that I have climate control.

Just don't see the point.

I think the service instruction is the 'special grease'.  Doesn't last, and you still get the fault randomly. I'm with Gregoir, not worth the hassle, which is a shame because the panoramic roof is a lovely thing. When it works.

Not that they use SPECIAL GREASE but it took them a couple of hours to complete (adjust frame)and it has been perfect for the last couple of years,if there is a way of finding the service instruction it may have the details on there but it was all completed under warranty and as I say never a problem since. Ps I’ve had several cars with sun roofs and NEVER a problem(the Skoda yeti was the first!

Very Interesting, its almost as if the frame doesn't allow for enough clamping force (potentially loose from install?). I'll take a look and see if I can adjust myself before  take the plunge and get Skoda on the blower

Mine was ok for 2 years from new and then developed the rattle ,repaired by Skoda and never a rattle since (2years +)

Does it really matter if it creaks a little on opening / closing, so long as it opens and closes okay?

Mine creaks a little in the initial stage of opening, but the important thing is that it opens and lets the fresh air and sun in!

Leaks is my major concern (fingers crossed).

Sorry should have made it clearer the creaking is whilst fully closed

Yes, thanks, and mine has done that occasionally too, but others above (HotVRs) also mentioned opening / closing.

Either way, the closed creaking has got to be pretty bad to negate the positive benefits of the roof overall!

Special grease was the applied "cure" for creaking standard and aftermarket opening roofs in the 80s and 90s. What's the perceived advantage in having a transparent roof?

The reason I prefer a panoramic sunroof is that it makes the car so much lighter inside, the option to close the electric blind if too light and to have the option of the roof tilted open or fully open.i don’t consider this a perceived advantage it’s an OPTION i prefer given the choice/option.

^ exactly what he said!

I got the panoramic roof to stave off boredom for my children on long journeys. They like watching aircraft. I also like the airy feeling it gives. Just not the creaking when opening and the knocking it makes when open. An unexpected benefit is that I find the car cooler after being parked in the sun than the previous Octavia 3 I had without the sunroof.
