Using different oil

Featured Replies

So I have a gorgeous 2011 TSI Elegance 1.8 Petrol that seems to be one of these cars that has the dodgy pistons. It really started hammering the oil a few months back.

I am am currently trying to save very fast so that I can get rid and want to know if using a “thicker” oil might slow the loss down, extending its life a little bit.

I read somewhere that changing to 5w40 rather than 5w30 might help?

Obviously I don’t want to do this if it results in quickening the engines death.

Gutted. Such a lovely car.

5w 40 Full Synthetic oil to VW 502 00 is the correct oil for fixed servicing, no harm using it.

the 5w 30 FS Long Life oil VW 504 00 for variable / flexible servicing or fixed is well worth stopping using.

Not sure that the 5w 40 FS will make much different to a gubbed engine, or excessive oil user, but it does no harm.

My other car is an ep3 civic type r which are renowned for oil usage at high rpm. Changing from 5w30 to 5w40 makes a big difference and reduces oil usage considerably. If it is an approved spec for the engine I'd certainly give it a try.

Cheers both of you. I’ll give it a go.

I had a CDAA Estate for a short while that was using 1l oil in 280 miles.... I tried 5w40 and it made no difference for me I'm afraid....

^^^ ?

Why would it, that engine was shagged was it not, gubbed, a dead parrot?
