1.4 TSI Engine Cover

Featured Replies

Simply aesthetic I'd suggest. Nothing more. Nothing wrong with that either. I'd not expect it to make any discernible difference with noise.

I might order one, simply to see if there is any sound proofing underneath :D

There's quite a bit under the engine cover on my Superb, but it does cover more of the engine...

The Diesel engine of your Superb needs more sound proofing than the 1.4 petrol engine.

I’d be wary of a 3rd party cover causing more noise if the engine causes it to resonate at particular rpm values.

Although it's an aftermarket cover I'm pretty sure it's based on VAG's existing design, it's just not fitted to the Kodiaq, or Karoq.

Now the Kodiaq is established I've noticed the cost reduction exercises are starting to kick-in. Some model year (MY) 19 engines now no longer get the sound proofing pad under the bonnet.

The cover comes supplied with 4x metal mounting brackets that are the same as those on my Superb and bolt onto pre-threaded holes on the engine. They have balls on the end which allow for the push fitting of the cover over onto the balls using (replaceable) rubber grommets.

I add a dab of silicone grease to the ones on the Superb to keep them supple...

They do a reasonable job of absorbing the vibration from the engine. It's only when the grommets wear and perish do the issues become apparant.

I guess the fact that the threaded holes for the mounting brackets are present would suggest Skoda saw some benefit to it. Perhaps it is purely aesthetic.

If it'll fit it'll be fine.

Assuming the female apertures are on the airbox to accept the two lugs are there, and there is an unused thread to take the support bracket then it's likely Skoda have simply chosen to save themselves the £3.24 cost of the part.

If only they'd invested that three quid on the washer pump.

Not quite as advertised.

At least its hidden under the bonnet so no one can tell I've cheapened the car by fitting a VW badge :D

Dead easy to fit, took less than 5 minutes. All the holes and lugs are already there so it was designed to fit. The supplied bracket sits under an existing bolt used to secure a heat shield so I didn't even need the supplied screw...

Just post a picture of both sides, and I'm sure we can help make sure it's of no further use to you...

In all seriousness though, why? The bonnet does a good enough job of covering the engine and the battery and the rest of the stuff in there. Are you one of these people that cleans your engine? Or have you just been struck down by an acute case of mustbuyalltheaccessoriesicanthinkofformynewtoyitis?

The latter :D

All my previous Skoda's have come with battery and engine covers. I think the bean counters have been busy with the Kodiaq.

I've always struggled with blank switches and missing parts.

If mine had ended up being a MY19 I'd be looking to source an insulation pad for the underside of the bonnet too.

Certainly looks the part. Where are you finding all this stuff?

  • Author

Aliexpress, a haven for all things cheap and Chinese.

Proceed with caution :D

How is the battery cover fitted?

Have you ordered any other tat since?

  • Author

It just sits on top, it's a pretty tight fit though.

I think I'm all blinged out now, should have offset my fair share of Trumps Chinese tariffs.

I hope all that plastic can be recycled when you're done with it...

Is that not just going to cause you a lot of grief removing it all when you take the car in for a service? Modifications are an easy excuse to void the warranty.

I won't be removing them, nor will I be removing the mudflaps, running boards, floor mats, boot liner, dash cam etc.

If Skoda are able to successfully claim a genuine VAG engine or battery cover can be attributable to any future warranty claims, I'll eat the spare wheel and post the footage on here.

Do Skoda sell those accessories approved for fitting to the Kodiaq? If they don’t then your comparison with fitting running boards is not relevant.

I’m not sure that arguing that because you’ve seen an engine cover fitted to another model of Skoda or VAG car means they don’t cause issues on the Kodiaq. You’re assuming that Skoda don’t fit them to the Kodiaq to save money, but that is only an assumption. If Skoda claim vibration or reduced air flow contributed to a fault, I’m not sure how you’d prove them wrong - there isn’t a fleet of Kodiaq running happily with them. They could also take the stance that if you’ve modified the engine bay, what invisible modifications might you have made to the ECU or electronics?

I’m sure your accessories are unlikely to cause a problem, but if it were me, I’d not be giving the dealer any cause to wriggle out of dealing with issues. They don’t seem to need much encouragement...
