From a Yeti to an Octavia Scout ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

For the last 3-4 years I've been driving a Yeti.

It's a 2011, 170 TDI 4x4, remapped plus uprated pads, dampers and RARB, and I love driving it - mostly with a bit of enthusiasm on rural roads where it handles and performs so much better than you'd expect.

The slight extra ground clearance is great when it snows on my cross-Peak District commute, or when there's dead animals, stones etc in the road...

However, the mileage is creeping up now and I'll probably be looking to change it in the next few months.

I've discounted another Yeti as the fuel economy is rubbish compared to other cars, and it's starting to feel a little longer in the tooth tech-wise. The 170 engine was dropped from the Yeti a while back now, and the highest output Yeti within the age of cars I'd be looking at would be the 150 TDI which doesn't really float my boat (we have that engine in our Superb 3).

What I'm after in the replacement:

 - pokey diesel engine (170+)

 - 4wd

 - bit extra ground clearance

 - no barge-like handling characteristics

 - ideally from VAG group

One potential candidate is an Octavia Scout, in 184 TDI guise. Probably around the 2016 era.

I was wondering if anyone else has made the same change, and how the Scout feels compared to the Yeti ?

Thanks for any thoughts :)

I had two Yetis before I got the Scout - I loved the Yeti (but sadly, my wife didn't - she complained we couldn't get enough shopping in the back and space was restricted when we took enough luggage for a months trip on a weekend away - who am I to argue!)

I didn't have the 170 variant of the Yeti and I only have the 150 psi Scout, so my comparisons aren't exactly what you are looking for, but these are my findings.

I'm six feet tall with a poor back (it's not bad, it's just a little stiff at times), so getting in and out the Yeti was much easier than the Octavia - but not that bad.  I though the seating position on the Yeti was better, but finally found a comfortable position on the Octy.

The Scout handles better than the Yeti  - not that I drive it hard these days, but still, the Scout feels more confident.

We haven't had a lot of snow where we live and I've always run with winter tyres in the colder weather anyway, but never had any problems with either vehicle.

Offroad, I have been very pleasantly surprised with the Scout - not that we do any major offroad stuff these days - mainly forestry tracks and grassy slopes , but the Scout copes with everything I've thrown at it so far - and I haven't bottomed it out yet either (despite having to tow a Land Cruiser out of some ruts where he managed to get all four wheels off the ground to once!), but then I'm aware of the "lower" ground clearance and pick my routes accordingly.

I have no complaints, I've grown to like the Octy and it's fit for my purposes ... I'd think it was OK for you, but you have to decide!

Not had a Yeti but I did change from an Oct 2 2010 Scout to an Oct 3 2016 Scout and the difference was night and day.  Only downside being the economy isn't as good as my old one.
