DSG First Timer Help!

Featured Replies

I have been given a loan DSG Karoq. Never driven a DSG. Heart in mouth I got it home. But when trying to gently and slowly thread it through a narrow gap for parking, it lurched forward. I stopped it on the brakes before hitting anything.

Is there a technique to control the speed, I'd slip the clutch in my manual or let it move on tickover. But with the auto handbrake how can it move on tickover? As I said please help.

You can use the foot brake to control the speed.

Use the lightest of touch on the throttle, and never use the left foot and the right foot at the same time.

if you have 2 feet retire one of them and just 1 foot does throttle and brake and not at the same time.

If it has Auto Hold image.png.30dcd60c1fb14c95f574f46cbbbade44.png Make sure its switched off (light isn't on) - the DSG should act like a normal automatic a little more then (it would be able to creep on tickover).

I was close to another car and a wall and yes I  used the foot brake, but not at the same time as the accelerator. But I have also just found out that Autohold needs to be disengaged to allow the car to creep in gear. Not sure if Autohold then starts up again when the brake is touched. Only got a day or so with the car and maybe I ought to get away from obstacles to practice some low speed maneuvers.

Just a light touch on accelerator, it should creep, don't put other foot on brake otherwise it will get confused and apply more power (will treat the resistance like trying to climb a kerb and give you more oomph)

switch off start stop will give you more control

No need to switch off 'autohold' with a petrol or diesel with DSG to park  IMO. (i have only one foot by the way, the left one and drive standard cars / pedals.)

Stop / Start off can be a good idea,

& be aware of parking sensors and cars that decide to apply the brakes just as you are parking carefully....

PS

Just a light touch on the brake pedal and 'autohold' does not activate.

Thanks guys for the tips. Size 12s don't help with a gentle touch.Stop/Start works every time as well. Grrr, that makes me realise that the system in my Octavia is indeed kaput, it's only worked once this year. Hence the loan car.

When I made the transition to DSG from manual, Nick at Garlands in Aldershot took me to a car park which was known to be empty and let me practice there first and the solution was simple put your left foot behind your right leg so it can't get to the pedals.

Also if you want to creep just take your foot off of the brake pedal and let engine revs to the work, if there's a slight uphill grade then the most subtle of touches on the throttle will suffice to gain a bit more forward motion and the most subtle of touches on the brake will halt it.

When driving normally I try not to use the brakes at all on quieter roads and just take my foot off the throttle and let the speed drop out of it naturally where possible and only use the brake when absolutely necessary, with the foot hovering over the throttle or brake pedal as appropriate.

Ah, but with a cold engine the engine idle speed was pretty high, and even the gentlest prod on the accelerator, to release the parking brake, made the car move too fast for my delicate manouvers.

Taking your foot off the brake pedal does not enable creep- the auto hold sees to that.
