Bolero MDI: Aux Input & USB Power

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got an Octavia mk2 FL, with a Bolero headunit. It has an MDI connector in the glovebox, and an aux in in the central armrest.

I've got one of those bluetooth into Aux adaptors, which is powered from USB. Previously, I've used the cigarette lighter to power it via USB, and the aux in for the audio connection. This has worked fine, but as the lighter port is permanently on, it means my bluetooth adaptor is always on.

I got an MDI -> USB A Female & Aux cable, which solved the power problems. However, the audio would start clipping, so I've gone back to my older method.

So my questions:

  • Would I expect lower audio quality through the MDI compared to the aux in, or was the cable I got poor quality
  • If I got a MDI -> USB A Female to power it, would I still be able to use the aux in port for audio (with the current MDI adaptor, it disables the aux port)
  • Is there another solution I'm not thinking of?

MDI would generally be the preferred option for most people, given that it supports charging, track display on the head unit, steering wheel buttons for track changing etc. and would give at least comparable sound quality to your Aux solution which does nothing but play audio. If you used the MDI then you'll have much more control over your music and wouldn't need to keep picking your phone up to change tracks etc.

You might also have Bluetooth in the car which could possibly support streaming.

However, in my experience Bluetooth streaming is a means to a poor end, but your way of Bluetooth to Aux gives you the worst of both worlds. Any reason why you don't just connect straight to the MDI unit?

Android phone playing Spotify.

I also often use Waze/Google Maps for navigation, so need these accessible/playing out of the speakers.
