EGR fault

Featured Replies

Hi all, recently had the dreaded flashing glow plug and limp mode scenario,  limp mode ain't fun with a car full of nearest and dearest.

Pulled over when safe turned off engine waited and restarted and full power back yeah!!

Next day OK then on the way to work on Monday here we go again.

As I was pushed for time and scared by the EGR scare stories on the internet i bought some Wynns Diesel EGR cleaner from Amazon.

Package arrived next day and I used it, fault gone and not returned car feels more eager and fuel economy is now up to 47 from 44 mpg.

I do plan to clean the EGR  properly when I get the time but the purpose of this post is to say for £10 this stuff really worked wonders for me, hopefully it will help someone here who has the same issues.

If you had the emissions fix on a diesel get it into the dealer within 2 years for a repair. Could be EGR replacement time.

For me it went away for a half a year but You can expect to come back soon. No i had to change completely. 1000eur, but the service told , the factory instruction requires to change some pipe as well.

Hi all have dodged the bullet on the fix. I plan to clean /replace the EGR when I have the time. The whole point was to say that there is a  possible quick fix for those of us that either cannot afford it or just want to get a few more miles before trade in etc.

My car is now on 112k and just this month had discs and pads all round so funds are a little stretched, hence the quick fix.

Thanks Ronhayley, wish I'd known about the Wynn's stuff.  I've just had my EGR replaced while on holiday in Italy.  Cost EUR1020 at the Skoda main dealer in Verona.     Back home now and trying to get the cost refunded by Skoda UK under Trust Building.   The car went fine on the way home with new EGR and at least the worst has now happened and have got it fixed, but would have been better to have kicked the can down the road for 1000 miles or so and got it fixed in the UK without the language problems and the feeling of being stranded.

If it was a Skoda main dealer - why did they not do it under the trust building measure themselves? The measure is not a UK only one, I was told it was valid across the EU. We certainly have exactly the same one here ion Ireland.

Hi guys thought I'd give an update, after a busy week on holiday up in Northumberland, lovely place and people, the car covered almost 1400 miles in  a week without a whimper!

Unfortunately on the return journey limp mode returned just after Warwick services on the M40. To be fair the car was able to cruise at 70 so it wasn't that much of an issue just acceleration was a little embarrassing and slow.

Booked the car into Kernahans in Witney as soon as I could. I knew it was EGR and glowplug 3 from a scan.

Genuine VW EGR  from TPS plus fitting kit plus 4 Glow plugs £750.

As Kernahans are a Ford dealer Stuart the master tech said it was a bit awkward but relatively easy, the dpf did not have to be removed and there were some access issues but a cup of Tea and 5 minutes breather cured that he said. Auto-data said 1.5 hours to complete in reality was 4.

Car is back to normal and although my wallet is lighter the car is back to being Superb again.

Upshot is that the EGR cleaner may get you out of a hole in the short term but the inevitable will happen so start saving.

Next job is to find the sh@#-head who scraped my  rear bumper by Banburgh castle.

An update to my post above: I got the cost of the repair in Italy refunded by Skoda UK!     What I had replaced was apparently the EGR cooler (language problems in Italy).  Got a long disclaimer letter saying the emissions fix definitely hadn't caused the problem, this was purely a gesture of goodwill etc etc, plus a nice cheque for £900-odd.

Hi everyone,

the Exhaust System Warning light is permanently ON on my Diesel Superb. The car has had the fix a good year ago and the engine behaved strangely at times. The Exhaust System Warning light came ON at odd times and went again. This time it is permanently on over a longer period.

The SKODA garage now tells me that the glow plugs need to be changed!? I find this a bit odd.

What is the connection of the Glow Plugs with the Exhaust System? The glow plug warning light never came ON!

Has someone experienced similar business?

I would be much obliged if someone could shed some light on this; thanks!
