5m19.546s.

How about that?

Just when Porsche's all time Nurburgring lap record of 6:11.13 from 1983 was starting to become (vaguely) under threat by other car makers, Timo Bernhard has taken the 919 EVO round 50 seconds faster!

5m 19.546s  averaging over 145mph

That's not just moving the goalposts; they've picked them up and thrown them over the border into Belgium!

Well done Porsche.

Indeed; they have decimated (and then some) their own ultimate lap record! :)

It's VAG, they'll have created cheat device software so the clock emits a lesser time than it actually should.

VW mashes Pikes Peak record, Porsche smashes the ring,  now they just need to get the Road cars WLTP results and order books open and that will be a real story relevant to those wanting to buy road cars that can be sold to them after August.

Haven't found a full lap video yet, but the few clips I have seen of the car during testing last month look like they are in >> fast forward!

Well, several cars have already gone below 6:50 including an EV (and that technology is maturing so fast you know there's a lot more to come).

I think that the NIO EP9 electric time of 6:45 on the 20832m circuit was a warning and probably pushed Porsche to move the goalposts before anyone got really close.

I wonder if Toyota or Audi will mod up their LeMans hybrid cars and have a go?

On a circuit like the Nordschleife, the ability to hold speed in a corner will always trump ability to accelerate when it comes to setting a record lap. But yes, if they can get a usable electric powertrain into a decent chassis it could get very interesting.

VW have just built the Pikes Peak EV outright record breaker with monster downforce. A version of that with a higher top speed could do the trick.

I'd have thought the problems with the Nordschleife now would be more to do with the quality of the track. It looks pretty bumpy.

It must actually be painful for those guys at that sort of speed in a car with rock hard race suspension.

Sure but the 956 was more of a production car than either the NIO or the 919.

Onboard video is up now:

It's utterly absurd how fast that thing is everywhere!

Engine wise I'd agree. The big boys in groupC all used tuned up production motors Jaguar Mercedes and Porsche, but the chassis were proper racecars, regardless of how many copies were made. Even old time extreme racers like the 917 were allegedly production cars (you had to build 25 to race) but their lethality to average drivers (RIP John Woolfe) meant they were nothing like production cars in fact.

There is apparently a road registered 962 in Japan: https://jalopnik.com/5949850/a-japanese-man-drives-his-awesome-porsche-race-car-on-the-streets-and-doesnt-crash-it

According to Wikipedia there were 28 956s made. That's more than NIO's entire "production" and all the 919s together!

Oh and there were 50 917s built; there are even pictures showing all 50 of them.

yeah not only that but Dauer racing built road car versions specifically to cheat the leMans rules and run as a GT

Absolutely; It makes Derek Bell's lap in "On-board 956", the previous holder of "fastest lap with a camera on-board" and second only to Stefan Bellof's lap in the old "all time list" look slow. And even at that I'm wondering if it could have been faster if the 919 could get in and out of Karousel properly rather than teetering around the top edge.

That and one or two fluffed gearchanges towards the end of the lap....

Aye; there were 91 962s made or converted from 956s. There isn't a clear number for how many were made road legal, but at least 6, by 4 different companies.

The first year of 917s was 25 just to qualify, and yes there were pictures of them all lined up for inspection by the CSI. (Ferrari built 25 512S cars as well but I think both firms cheated on the inspections _ many of the cars weren't complete certainly not race ready)

Eventually there were 67 917 chassis plates, although some were spares that were built up to replace wrecks.

Brutal. That thing goes through 150-200mph like it was nothing.

With some mods I think sub 5 minute is possible.

He spends ages bouncing off the rev limiter doing about 370 kph ie 230 mph, with another 500 rpm he could have cut more seconds off the lap.

Just goes to show what a two litre hybrid can do.  Who needs cubes when you have good petrol turbo and 2 energy recoup systems.

Shame not in WEC to battle with Toyota and just doing these handful of appearances and headline events in 2018.

Not likely. Running out of revs wasn't the issue: the car had no more power available at that point. You can see that from the way it started losing speed on the climb up to the end of the straight.

At this point I'm left thinking that the limiting factor for future attempts will be the driver's physical and mental fitness.
