Gear Selector Indicator Flashing...2010 Skoda Octavia

Featured Replies

Today the Gear Selected Indicator on the dashboard control panel "the indicator that shows which gear you are in "D3, D5, D7" when driving" started flashing on and off, when I stopped and switched the engine off and back on again the flashing stopped,.....

I've looked in the owners manual but can't find any reference to it...

The weather today is extremely hot 28c, could that be the problem or cause of it...

Just been for a second drive today, the same thing happened, after about 5 miles the indicator started flashing on and off, switched off and restarted the engine, the flashing stopped, after a couple of miles driving it restarted flashing again....

Is it the temperature "weather", or my clutch on it's way out.......I would prefer the first......

Well. I don't want to bring bad news but do you think all the Skodas sold in italy, spain or greece show that behaviour when it it 30C plus?

It is a fault indication I would say. A fault read from vcds may indicate sonething specific like clutch over temperature but I could not say for sure what it is.

Did the car continue to change gear when the lights were flashing..

<<Did the car continue to change gear when the lights were flashing..>>............No problems, changed from D1 through to D7 and back to D1, I even changed to "S" mode and it still changed gear.....

Took the car to a Skoda Dealership explained the problem to the mechanic, he must have been good, without even looking under the bonnet, starting the engine or plugging in the diagnostic machine, his synopsis "the gearbox has gone", I thought this guys good, I wonder if he can predict this weeks lottery numbers, no he couldn't, he did predict it would cost over £3,000 plus for a new gearbox.....

He did offer to take it in as a part exchange on a new car......

Took the car to my local garage "where they've MOT'd the car for the last 5 years, they recommended an automatic gearbox specialist in Marple, he diagnosed "with a diagnostic plug in computer" the problem was the Mecatronic Unit was on it's way out, he could fit a new one but he was fully booked, he recommended "C.A.L. in Denton" who specialise in Mecatronics, phoned them Saturday afternoon, they told me to bring the car in 09:00am the following Monday morning and they could fit a unit straight away while I waited....11:00am Monday drove away job done.......£900+vat.....12 months guarantee..

Only gripe, I had to pay £2:50 for a coffee at a local Costa Coffee while I waited......

Interesting this Mick I had this happen last year and was told that a recall for this was issued in 2011 and the fact I bought my 1.4 TIS second hand in 2013 the previous owner didn't bother with the recall, cost me £1400 at the main dealer and that's with £ 400 discount ugh!!

Hi

I have the same problem, blinking of gear indicator after 8-10 minutes, even without driving (the engine was on) !

Can I just continue to drive normally without changing my Mechatronics ?

hi raphael ... how did this work out for you

i also have the blink of death it seems

but the earlier megatronic fix seems a way to go

There was a recall world wide in 2012, but only a Service Campaign in Europe started 2014.

This was '34F7' to change the synthetic oil to mineral oil in 2009-2012 DQ200's and do a software update.

?

Was that ever done?     (on DQ200's 2013-2015 was '34H5' a software update started in 2017)

There is a Thread in the Fabia Mk2 section on 'Flashing Spanner',   also the DQ200 DSG Thread pinned at the top of the section.

There are cheaper fixes now available,

but first you need the correct diagnosis of the issue.

Just had mine repaired after having the flashing spanner symbol.

It spewed green hydraulic oil out.

Was the mechatronics housing that had a crack in it.

Housing replaced and mechatronics rebuilt.

thank you ... yes ill go to my local garage i worked for for 3 years and talk it over with them ... and consider other reasons . .. i like the car but i think it needs to be returned on there in the limited one month warranty

it had other issues to this one ... id not expect anyone to have caught up with this issue

hells teeth a flashing gear number means expensive not even a change of colour ... not good on skoda / vw mark ... looks like as said on another blog another VWgate moment arriving

just say i started my enquiries on this subject by ringing CAL at Denton they had closed that day but the very next morning Sally called me ... Tom your a long way from us ... and kindly so kindly took the time to text the no. of vantronic in hayes who distribute the parts to be given the number of a local specialist

ive had my skoda on the computer now ... its the two friction clutch discs worn thin ... at 74k miles (petrol 1.8 tsi ) ! ... car going back to dealer ... done deal

otherwise 3k to fix !!!

Only £3,000 to fix if someone is taking the Michael and doing more than replacing clutch packs.   Is this on the 2009 car?

hiya ... yes 1.8 petrol tsi hatchback with rather nice l&k interior ... oddly since my garage reset the dsg 7 on mine ... the gear number indicator d1to d7 has stopped flashing ... but they reset the reader and it came up basically as the 2 clutches plates are thinning ... how long will they be ok is the problem ... they can get the mechatronic for 350 as an exchange part

they were thinking of changing the oil but after the read out ... they didn't look happy for me

i used the 3000k pounds from a post above that started this ... yes my guys said all sorts of extras and you never knows could be a nightmare ... the head of knowledge who has retired so one of sons runs it really well

said that VW had problems in the early years and really only got it all together by 2014 !! ... sheesh

know the gear indicator is not flashing i realise i could have happily not known any of this information but those around know i've got let the car go and the dealer has agreed

you should be able to trust even a second hand gearbox ... looks like its manual for me again 😞

i really like driving the auto so im out of sorts with all of this to be honest

thanks tom

oh thanks to everyone who took the time to share knowledge

i am having another skoda octavia ill probably look for a 2 litre if i cant find the tsi 1.8 petrol

have you seen the news today electricity charges are going to make long distance electric car driving twice as expensive as a petrol car to run !

Here is another thread and a sad tale and an incompetent Main Dealership or with incompetent staff. This one in Hamilton.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/444617-7sp-dq200-dsg-failure

Missed DQ200's were late 2012, not part of either Service Campaign.

See page 8.  Interesting stuff from Skoda. Guff actually.

Lots of rubbish was given to @Nortonpuch

A Skoda / VW replacement MCU (From VW with Warranty) and replacement clutches does not cost £3,000 and that is with a Skoda Main Dealer farming the work out.  Which is why I questions £3,000 as a figure given just for replacing clutches.

Ps. There is some total crap posted on EV cost to charge.   When you are paying 70 pence a KWh with an inefficient EV then it is as expensive or even more than an efficient ICE.  As to double the price to home or work charge then we will see.   Business users and EV,s is not just about the cost of electric or public charging, there is the saving in tax to be counted in.  And travelling in low emission zones.

PPS. If I had to pay twice as much as I have over the past 30,000 miles of EV driving for electric and CPS cards that would be £300 then.  But I know I have had it good over the past 2 years.

.................................

This can be the solution for many needing a MCU.  No point replacing like for like which can have the same issues eventually.

nice post ... good knowledge ... thank you

the last part is fascinating dont have what you had before installed

strangely ... when the garage my friends cleared down the data ... and reset it after gleening info to suggest clutch plates not in best shape and deciding no point in changing thecoil to see if that helped any

since then the gear indictor numbers are not flashing ever ... even after a 5 min warm up ... 2 days running and i wouldnt know i had an issue

id love to think its all that was needed .for awhile at least ... ive arranged to return the car to the deal

any thoughts appreciated

Did they just clear the codes or perform a full basic settings? The later forces the gearbox to relearn the clutch biting points etc so can buy you some more time if the clutches are wearing. It's not a long term solution though unfortunately.

good morning ... on a small less trodden island in the cyclades ... sorry i missed your reply ... they did a full reset ... it stopped the gear indicator light flashing ... all show steady now ..  buying time ... so tempting

thank you much appreciated
