Amundsen Sat Nav

Featured Replies

Why oh why does my sat nav try to lead me off junctions on the A12 only to lead me back on, I've tried everything I can think of, no dynamic routs, fastest, I never ask it for the shortest rout.

If it's what I think you are describing, it's not just the Amundsen - my Columbus does it too. An example would be driving down a major A road. It tells you to "turn half left" down the slip road, then "take the second exit at the roundabout" which puts you straight back onto the major road you were originally on. Is this the same as your issue? I've never found a resolution but would love to hear if someone has. Mine is always set to quickest route though I'd be surprised if that has anything to do with it.

Exactly! I'm not to concerned here in England, but I feel I may waste a lot of time if it does this in Europe where I'm not to familiar with the roads. I've tried, quickest, shortest - just to see what it does, with trailer, without trailer, I also tried setting it to only give one option and nothing seems to work. I guess TomTom just uses a better system to calculate. I'll try google maps on my phone today and compare the two.

I’m often surprised at some of the instructions it gives me.

When I set the destination and it gives me three route options, two of them often look identical, but it’s difficult to see any detail on the screen.

Im still using my 10year old Navman satnav, which is always set to ‘quickest route’.

The three route thing is annoying, but the good news is you can turn it off (at least on mine you can). From memory it is in Navigation - Settings - Route Options. I just set it to the red (quickest) as a default so I don't have to select each time. The other 2 are orange (shortest), which is often but not always the same as quickest, and green which is the least fuel used. It will route you all over a county to get 5p saving on fuel and I would avoid it at all costs.

I have the Amundsen but haven't used the SAT NAV a lot, had reason to use it last Friday while also providing an internet connection for the kids, which meant that the SAT NAV was also connected to online services. After starting the route it gave an estimated arrival time, a few minutes later I checked the destination time again and it was significantly different (no announcement), I believe this because of the online services updating for traffic or other variables. iirc though, if it dynamically changed from the selected route it announced "change to selected route due to traffic" etc. when I got close to change.

I use mine a lot (not internet connected) and it often updates arrival times without changing the route - not sure where it gets the information from, but in my case it definitely isn't online sources.

Interesting, I only get traffic updates when the infotainment is connected to the internet so assumed it was for that reason.

We might be talking at cross purposes:). I was talking about arrival times in the satnav rather than traffic updates. I don't really use the traffic updates, but from memory I can get them - I thought they updated from the radio / DAB - but it's all witchcraft to me:D.

I assumed the arrival times changed because of traffic updates but if it changes when offline then there are other factors. Even if I do not have a destination set and infotainment is showing the radio, the nice sat nav lady speaks to warn me of traffic situations on the road ahead (sometimes behind) but this only happens when the infotainment system is connected to the internet.

Witchcraft indeed :D

My infotainment is never connected to the internet, but I do get traffic updates, without having a destination set.

I find the ETA is quite pessimistic, as it gets earlier the closer I get.

Mine's the same and is never connected to the internet.  I even receive traffic updates when I'm abroad.  In April, I had a message warning of a high speed pursuit on the autobahn when I was in Germany and a vehicle facing the wrong way on the motorway in Belgium.

There are two types of traffic update.

- Traffic updates from the radio

- online traffic information

my old amundsun can’t be connected via the internet and has the first traffic update type.

if for example a traffic jam clears on route, or you get through an area quicker or slower than expected that arrival time will update.

That makes sense, the radio updates never really worked here (Rural Ireland) and would explain why I only get the audio updates when online.

Me too! I have reinstalled the latest updated maps but it has made no difference.

There have been a lot of overnight roadworks on the A12 in recent weeks and I wonder whether the Sat Nav is receiving out of date data.

Same for me on Columbus with updated maps. It was the A329M yesterday, though it happens elsewhere too.
