VRS 230

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this forum and hoping to gain some valuable information. I'm looking to purchase a VRS TSI hatchback. I've seen one at at dealer 64 plate for 14k (is this the 230?). How are these as a car? I'm coming from a 2007 S class which was an excellent to drive but a pig to maintain, I've just spent £1000 on a air con compressor so it's getting me slightly upset.

I know comparing these two are like chalk and cheese but I'm looking for a good family car that's reliable and fun to drive. I've had BMWs in the past and again, brilliant cars but unreliable (must be my luck)

The car in question has a DSG gearbox and i've driven a passat DSG so I know that they are smooth. Most of my journeys are on motorways and B roads as part of my commute. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments. I'm going to go to my local Skoda dealership to test one but for me I'm looking for a nice cruiser (bit like a golf but to suit my growing family) :)

64 will be a 220 variant. 230 pre-facelift came out around September 2015 iirc.

They are a good all rounder and generally pretty reliable. Not sure I could drop to one coming from an S Class though. Compressors aren't generally cheap for any car.

Refinement is probably one of the biggest niggles with the Octavia, and the S Class is probably one of the most refined cars out there. Make sure you get a lengthy test drive on a range of roads to be sure you can live with it.

What mileage is the car on? If it's 40k yet the DSG should have been serviced.

Thank you. I'm worried about the refinement too if there really is a big difference. I do think a well rounded test drive is in order as even the dealer was a bit miffed to my choice of vehicle change. I am either going to verge to this or an f10 bmw 5 series. I havent had much luck with other german marques but I think a well cared for car would be the key as my previous ones were high spec but bottom of the price range

An F10 5 series is lovely and a noticeable step up in quality, refinement and some rather nice 6 cylinder engines. Obviously costs more to run and repair than an Octavia but imagine it should still favour well vs an S Class. The 530d would be the pick of the range for me and the N57 3.0 diesel is generally trouble free - much better than earlier N47 2.0d which is notorious for chain issues.

BMW have a very good and comprehensive warranty scheme, but it does get a bit expensive on the 5 over 60k mileage.

That Octavia looks pretty decent, it's not loaded with spec, but not completely spartan either. Has the smaller nav and it's MIB1 generation with the smaller, lower resolution screen. No heated seats or windscreen of either if these are desired. No front parking sensors. Standard sound system isn't great either. Not trying to put you off, just trying to think of things you might have on the S Class that might irk you if you no longer have them.

Go in with an open mind, take it for a test drive and you'll soon know whether you could see yourself in one or not :)

Says it's got nav, but then says the headunit is the Bolero. Which doesn't have nav...

Definitely has Nav - in pics top right infotainment button says Nav, but, as above, smaller screen.

Seems a decent car if not high spec.

Long test drive required. Take your time and test / play with all the toys.

Good luck!

Don't rely on the presence of the button!

Why not? A Nav button = Nav

Those without Nav have ‘SETUP’ in the top right corner.

The spec on the advert saying Bolero is just the boggo spiel for all Octys.

This, they haven't exactly bothered to check the description matches the car...

Internally adjustable headlight beam level - Nope, it has Bi-Xenons which adjust themselves and no manual adjustment.

Collision mitigation braking system - Nope, no radar present in lower front grille.

Bolero radio/CD - no. It even lists satellite navigation but no mention of the correct Amundsen unit.

Just saying. Worth checking and not assuming.

Listing "Bolero" seems pretty specific...

Guy in an S class Merc recently gave me a very naughty brake test in the outside lane of the M1. Don't think he could accept his 2 tonne cruiser was slower than my VRS. Hope it wasn't you by the way. Had to undertake him in the vacant centre lane as he wasn't actually overtaking anyone at the time. In my experience 10 year Mercs are used by Eastern European warehouse temps as taxis.Rant over you should be looking at least at 2015 model year VRS models because this is when Sat Nav became standard.;)

I've seen photo's advertising petrol cars with a 5,000 redline tacho and diesel cars with a 7,000 redline tacho, clearly showing the wrong mileage on the wrong car, they get confused bless them!

Seems quite expensive to be honest , it's got 40k miles
