Eyeing up an Octavia: Family car, hatchback v estate etc

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

I'm eyeing up an Octavia for our next family car.  We've been coping recently with my ol' 2009 Fiesta with a top box with wife + 18 month old, which has been put to the limit in terms of capacity with recent family trips including camping!

The Octavia seems to tick the boxes for this.  We'll want a petrol engine, so I imagine either a 1.4 or a 1.0 if we can stretch to a new enough one that has that engine.  Budget probably £15k max though.

I'd appreciate any hatchback v estate stories for our use case.  I've searched around these forums for a bit first, and it's interesting that both models are the same dimensions on the outside.  How are you getting on with it?

Any general thoughts from those using it as a family car like this would be much appreciated!

I've owned a 14-plate Octavia estate since the beginning of March, having previously owned 2 focus estates, the last one being a 2.0TDCi estate.

Now I did consider replacing like for like and sticking with Ford BUT....... the focus just wasn't quite big enough for the four of us (wife and daughters 4 & 1), especially if we went away anywhere for a night or two.

My mechanic friend who is a Ford guru recommended the Octavia as he now maintains ambulances/paramedic cars and said the Octavias he looks after run really well, he's never been to a call out for a broken down one and rarely sees them between services.

I ended up buying the first one I went to view, it drove lovely and was HOOOOOGE.  Way more legroom in the rear even with the driver's seat back where I need it and the boot is immense.

It's suiting us really well as a family car, safe & comfortable and the 2.0TDi engine even lets me have a little fun when I'm on my own ;)

Both have huge boots, I could have got away with a Octavia Hatchback, as the boot is huge, as my wife mainly drives the car we settled on the Fabia estate, even that might be a wee look.

Hi. I wanted to ask if anybody has done measurements for the skoda Octavia vrs245 boot. (Like the pic I am attaching from carwale.com)

I could only find the measurements for the skoda superb. See picture

basically I am trying to figure out whether I can fit in Bromptons bike upright.

Appreciate the help and reply.

So having both a 2008 Fiesta (2 door) and the Octavia (estate), the Octavia is obviously fantastically more practical...and if that's what you need, go for the estate!

Interestingly, I was given a lift in a brand new 5 Series estate this evening, which was absolutely gorgeous and in a different league to the Octavia, but I did find it funny that the Octavia has way more leg room in the back the 5, which is a significantly bigger car

I still can't get over how much boot space the Octavia has after the past two cars being an E-Class and an XC70, and being a much more compact car! Just this week I had some stuff for work which included a very large flight case, large box, overnight luggage, laptop rucksack, a few odds and sods and randomly a pallet...and still had space for more - the XC70 would have been full, and with its shallower boot, the gear probably would have been on show.

Get the estate and you'll never be agonising whether you should have gone for that little bit more practicality when you're loading up the baby and camping gear and it's a bit of a squeeze

Cheers,

Nick

It’s definitely a black hole..

do we know if there is retractable version of the parcel shelf for the hatchback?
