Engine fan on when AC is on

Featured Replies

Hi there. Is the above situation normal. Even from engine cold when I started the car this afternoon the engine fan came on as the AC was on. When I turn the air con off again the fan stops. But it is loud enough to hear over the engine when stationary. The car is a 1.9 tdi pd 105. Just recently bought the car so am just getting used to what’s normal. Many thanks

Yes. When A/C is switched on, rad fan is triggered by refrigerant pressure exceeding a threshold value, independently of any engine coolant temperature trigger.

Thank you Wino. I don’t need to have the refrigerant drained and re-gassed then?

Not unless the cooling of cabin air isn't adequate. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

Aye, fan on with ac is normal

The fans force air though the condenser to cool it, it's not like fridge or freezer they don't have them, just a big black grid on the back or where the compressor is.
