Dashcam (and possibly rear cam) fitting to a contract hire vehicle

Featured Replies

Anyone had any experience of doing this or thoughts on it? I would like to have one (or two) for peace of mind.

I don't want to run it from the 12V power outlets and have the wires dangling but, with it being a contract hire (3 year), I really don't want to have to go to the extent of breaking into the loom or removing trim.

Any ideas?

All the ones I've seen connect into the fusebox by piggy-backing on a fuse, and you push the wires into the trim with a wee little prodder thingy. No messing around with looms or removing any trim.

I'm halfway through fitting mine (front only), my power cable wasn't long enough to give enough clearance past the A-pillar airbag. I'll post up a how-to with pictures when done.

No trim removal needed or modifications to the cars wiring, the hardest part is deciphering Skoda's instructions on how to unlatch the hinges of the glovebox to access the fusebox.

It can be done with no wires on show either, the headlining, A-pillar trim, door seal and lower glovebox can all remain in situ.

The Kodiaq is all but identical to the Karoq, see here for plenty of pictures...

Some dealers are now offering to fit and supply them for you. When I bought Bear number two I got a good price from the dealer to supply and fit the camera.

My dealer supplied and fitted mine before handover.

Skoda supply and fit this for £210.

You can obviously buy cheaper (my fairly decent Transcend was only £85, whereas my Roadhawk DC1HD was £195).

At least with the Kenwood you should have the assurance  Skoda know about it (should - the mechanics at one of my Skoda dealers thought my rear dashcam was a reversing camera, "ye canny f**King see it, it's that size!" though why he was going into the boot of my car when I was getting the cambelt changed is another matter! It's an approved component, so any issues should be easily rectified.

£210 is pretty good.

My self-sourced Garmin was around £100, plus another £30 for the longer power cable, piggyback fuseholder etc. then a good hour or two fitting it all myself.

£80 extra for an approved Kenwood camera fully fitted at a Skoda main dealer is something I wish I'd known about a few months ago!

Anyone know how Skoda fit them?

Are they also using piggyback fuse holders to power them?

I have the Blackvue 650s 2 CH dash cams fitted. (Front and rear ) I'm after an answer please. Does anyone know how to save an event manually, by pressing a button or something. If you see an Incident there seems to be no way of saving it,  you have to look at your watch, remember the time of the incident then later on start searching for it.  Is there anyway to save the file instantly ?

From the online manual

If a driver is involved in an accident, the G Sensor senses the force of impact and automatically triggers the Drive Recorder to record and save the event. The BlackVue is fully programmable but typically would be set to save 15 seconds before and after an accident. If a driver sees some road rage and wishes to record the event he can manually press a button which will again record and save as an event.

That is pretty much exactly what I was after and by getting it done at the dealers, it means no potential warranty issues or hassles. Not too bad price wise as well (I thought it might be much worse tbh knowing dealer prices for some things).

It just goes to show how far things move on. There's more features in the Kenwood than my Roadhawk which was a high end camera at the time 5 years ago.

The GPS feature is more useful than people give it credit for. It's not just the fact it gives your location on a map during playback, but more importantly, you don't have to worry about resetting the date and time.

My Transcend does not have GPS capability, and at times shows a different date and time to the footage recorded on my GPS Roadhawk.

Three pieces of advice;

1. Format the memory card at the beginning of every month, it reduces the chance of files being corrupted.

2. Get the biggest memory card the camera can handle. You'll be surprised just how quickly it fills up. My Transcend can only handle 32gb whereas the Roadhawk can take 128gb.

3.  Buy a spare memory card for the times you have to either view footage, or format the memory card.

I know (second hand ) how useful these can be after a friend was driving an wagon up to Aberdeen (a number of years ago) with a dashcam (with GPS) fitted and was hit by a woman coming the wrong way down a slip road - it proved he was exactly where he should have been and travelling at exactly the speed he should have been. It also proved that his split second reactions probably prevented at least one if not more deaths.

I will be getting a 128GB card - they are pretty damn cheap now so no sense in scrimping on it.

Do you happen to know which button it is please or is it any button ?

Thanks

Manual recording is a feature of BlackVue dashcams (with built-in Proximity senor) that creates a separate Event recording file (starting 5 seconds before it was triggered) when the sensor is touched, or a finger is waved within 20mm of the sensor. The manual recording file thumbnails are marked as "M".

  • Manual recording can't be triggered if the dashcam is already recording another event at that moment.
  • The length of manual recording file is 1 minute in DR650GW dashcams and can be 1, 2 or 3 minutes in DR650S dashcams depending on the file length that you have set in dashcam/firmware settings. -> Recording settings -> Event and Parking mode recording duration.

Remember Google search is you’re friend when looking for dash cam features 8-)

I'd rather use a plate if you don't mind.
