Unexpected water feature on 4x4 Estate

Setting aside I've just had a wheel bearing failure at 26,000 miles which hasn't pleased me as the car does not get abused........I have discovered an endearing feature of the rear door after a heavy rain storm. My car is parked slightly nose up and I now know the doors appear to fill with water when shut. I discovered this ten minutes ago as I've just been out and opened the rear nearside door and bucket loads of water poured out of the door drains, apparently sealed in by the door seal as it wasn't dribbling out. Intrigued I thought...try the offside door, and  I got a repeat performance. Hmmm !?

 

Anybody else had a similar experience ?

You know when the dealer says "they all do that....". This time it could well be true!

Owners need to be aware to open car doors come winter time, especially where they might use warm water in their morning de-frosting and yet temps stay around freezing during the day or night over several days or weeks.

If during thaw times the doors other than the drivers are not being opened you can get a few kilo of ice in the doors.

Odd from a Czech Manufacturer that must know about cold weather, but then they do put Ice Scrappers in the Fuel Filler Flap.

The Fuel Filler Flap that can be prone to freezing so that people need to pour hot warm water on it to be able to get fuel in. 'Simply Clever' Skoda.

This was common on earlier builds & is a problem with the door seal drain hole locations.

There is a revised door seal with better placed holes that should correct your problem.

 

I had the same problem of wet shoes every morning it rained & also had the same issue described by OffSki when the doors froze completely shut due to a block of ice around the seals & door hinges.

I had an intermediate solution from my garage before the new part was available (basically adding new holes to the existing seals) & its worked perfectly.

Now no water retension even after pressure washing.

 

You should ask your dealer to fit the new door seals for you. The part numbers & pictures were in one of the previous threads about it.

Oh, and wheel bearings are very prone to early failure in my experience - both fronts and rear near side done on mine, only 33,000 miles :dry:

I've now caught up on the older water thread, but i'm fairly new to the Octy so just picking up on its foibles. Its nice to know I am not entirely mad. Thanks for all your answers

Ive never had the fuel lid freeze. And where I live it can go from 5 degrees and rain to -15 over the night.

Lucky you. 

Others have done where it might be raining or just thawing and go to just below freezing overnight or during the day or during a journey.

 

You will find it has happened with various models over different years of manufacturing in countries without seriously cold winters.

Not everyone prepares vehicles for winter time.  and Vorsprung Durch Technik never occurs to Skoda CZ.

Ive had the fuel flap freeze on some of previous cars (mondeo and bora) but not on the octy so far. 

The doors and bootlid only freeze if I dont smear the seals with silicone or something similar.

I thought the “doors filling with water feature” was only in the Skoda rapid,looks like it’s being extended across the range.

It is a 'Characteristic'  passed on from VW who never got the hang of rubber, be that seals, belts, gaskets etc.

Since they moved from Air Cooled and open tops they still never got the hang of keeping H2o in engines and out of passenger cabins other than when the H2o gets trapped in the doors and in the scuttle panel.

 

As to preparing cars for winter, that is fine if they are yours, 

no use if you borrow them, they are fleet or hire cars where you get the keys and drive and do not go doing any prep maybe other than checking Tyre Pressures, 

Oil level, Coolant Level, Washer Bottle level.

 

Obviously you see those collecting a Skoda Hire car doing all those checks when they pick up a vehicle.

After a torrential cloudburst,  yes  mine held water for a while. Not worried about a short term retention of water. And imho it's not a general VW problem. I've owned many VW group from the 1980s to the present day. 

^^^ Correct, not a general VW problem, the problem is VW Groups sourcing of door seals and fitting to Skoda's. 

Be that Fabia, Roomster, Octavia, Superb of different Mk's,  Fabia from the original to the All New 3rd Generation in 2014 which is about the 5th version including Face Lifts, and another Face lift about to be available.  We will see if they retain H2o in the door until it is opened and drains.
