Is it worth buying a new petrol or diesel car in 2018?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all.

My current car is a diesel 184 VRS estate with another year to run on my PCP.  Tax disc is cheap, fuel economy is good and it is pretty cheap motoring as far as I am concerned.  My annual mileage is low - 5,000 - but because there was a good deal at the time I have been quite happy having diesels for the last two cars - note never had any DPF problems!!!

I like to plan ahead, so am turning my mind to what my next care will be.  TBH having had 2x Octavia estates it really ticks all the boxes for a large family and still having a bit of grunt as a VRS.

Initial thoughts are to order a 245 estate when Skoda gets its act together to announce MY19 specs (note to Skoda - I am not buying until this is clear!).

However, my local dealer has just launched a new voucher deal which *may* be tempting.  http://www.westendskoda.com/new-voucher  It looks like popularity of the diesel engine has plummeted and this is what they want to shift/need to encourage customers to buy.  I am not averse to getting another diesel especially if the deal is good - would consider a hatch for a £4k contribution over and above Skoda contribution.  Will need to see the T&Cs because it will no doubt be swings and roundabouts.  The equity in my current car is likely to be low due to VAG-gate but any extra deposit contributions could make up the shortfall.

What I am basically asking is (i) does this look like a good deal, (ii) is it daft going for a diesel when there is major uncertainty and (iii) is a high powered petrol engine really the answer?

I'm all for green travel (keen cyclist and use the trains a lot here) but petrol and diesel isn't going anywhere anytime soon - is it?

Many thanks.

I can only speak from a personal POV, but for me, 'diesel-gate' isn't stable enough yet for me to want to get another diesel right now.

I had a dealer give me the pre-prepared, "But diesels are _great_ now!", but the last person I am going to accept that speech from is something representing the company that was fiddling the results in the first place.

Correct.

Only slight concern is if you have the misfortune to commute by car into a major city. Local rules might apply there.

On the surface it appears to be a good deal, but you really need to see the cost to change to get the full picture. And what are the other offers that it's 'on top' of? If you look on Drive The Deal, right now they're offering £9,377 discount on a 2.0 TDi Laurin + Klement - about 33% discount.

That kind of discount will offset a hell of a lot of depreciation. How long do you plan on keeping it? If it's a fair while, then the longer that is then the less depreciation will matter anyway. If you don't plan on keeping it very long, you can always mitigate any depreciation uncertainty PCP'ing or leasing instead of purchasing outright.

One thing to note - on that voucher it states to be registered by 31st December, but follow the asterisk to the bottom and the registration must be by 30th September. The £4k off the diesel hatchback is also far more discount than any other model. I am speculating, but these could be stock cars that won't comply with WLTP and must be sold before the new rules come in.

If anyone hears about any stock vrs cars which need registering being offered very cheap let me know, I could be tempted to have another on a one off offer!!

It’s a bad deal. The net discount over a petrol is just £2,300. Several dealers are currrntly offering 1.5L Octavia SE L at 20-24% discount. The Octavia is already a fast depreciating car and I can only imagine what a diesel bought today will be worth in 3-4 years time.

You don't need a diesel for 5000m/year, unless this dealer of yours doesn't  give a discount beyond precedent.

This government couldent run a pi$$ up in a brewery..and neither could the other lot, once they have finished telling you how bad Diesel is they will turn back to petrol and so on...
