3.6l Superb

Featured Replies

How good was the 3.6l variant ? They must be rare and i find them intriguing. Were they fast? Was the fuel economy abysmal??

would one be a good secondhand purchase?

I had one a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun but MPG for me was around 22. They make a great sound and are loaded with kit as standard. The depreciation is high so they make a good second hand buy. While I had mine I only ever saw one other. Exceleration was good duein no small part to the four wheel drive.

I drive it daily. It is a great car and i love it, packed with addons. Fuel economy for me over 50.000 km is avg. 10.3 l/100 km. Sound, acceleration and 4x4 drive is fun all year long.

I have had mine from new, been great, almost 80,000 miles in the 7 years, still on original brake pads & disks and the original battery!

Only  issues  I have had, immediately after it’s last MOT,  was a broken spring first a front then a week later a rear, both near side, garage blamed speed humps the crap state of the roads and the design of the springs. Oh and sticking fuel cap sorted with a new solenoid.

Fuel consumption isn’t amazing but I always get over 30mpg on a run, tend to use my wife’s Abarth for local driving, as it does like a drink in stop start driving, but the worst thing is the Road Fund Licence, over £500 per year which is madness.

acceleration and 4x4 drive

For the reference, with the MAF disconnected (meaning it is currently running in the engine safe mode, engine warning light is on, I'm waiting for a new MAF sensor at the moment), I still get 7.2 secs 0-100 km/h (6.75 sec 0-60 mph) ... not bad ... :D

Good...try it with launch mode on and good MAF :)

I love this engine!

Mine has big shoes to fill as my previous cars both were charged V8s. I find the engine whinny and as with most na lumps you have to get the revs going.

That said it can still surprise me and make me chuckle. Oh and the sleeper factor is really great.

The 4x4 offers very good traction so launching is always a success. My 550bhp rwd merc could not day the same. In the very dry it was a killer but damp progress could be interesting.

The dsg has been a disappointment. All my vw mates have raved about it for years. Personally I'm yet to be wowed.

Overall it's an interesting car with some nice features.

That's a big setback in terms of raw power that you're hoping to find the Superb even remotely satisfactory ... I've had an opportunity to test-drive a Chrysler 300C '06 5.7 HEMI RWD for  several days a while back, and it was something else (heavy and lots of power/torque), but comparing the Superb 3.6 to it, they're not much different - the weight difference obviously helps the Super, it being only 1700 kgs, producing 260 HP ... not that much compared to some other turbo or larger displacement NA engines, but enough for almost any abnormal driving situation you may find yourself in (track days excluded) ... the AWD is also a nice bonus, keeps the car stable and avoids front wheel slipping. The DSG for me (coming from a AT6 on a Citroen C5) is a big improvement, driving a "regular" automatic gearbox is almost tiring now, when you get to know a working and proper DSG 6-speed to provide the shifting (don't know how the newer models work, supposedly the 7-speeds actually aren't that great)

To be honest it's a totally unfair situation for my Superb. If we consider the at new costs of the Superb vs my Merc they are like £40k apart.

That said the family love the Superb. They like the rear legroom, boot and the fact daddy now drives less fast.

I guess I will keep it for a while, it was a whim purchase as I wanted rid of a weasel XF.

 Jag? I wouldn't mind the newer XJ ... :D

Yep Jag XF, 3 litre derv twin turbo. The whole inlet design is plastic. Plastic, forced induction and age don't mix well.

New XJ is truly something special inside. I used to have a XFR as well. That was a good car but I preferred my AMG and tuning options seemed better.
